It has several pen marks to the title page, publication page, top page edges and inside the back cover. There are residual sellotape marks to the back cover. The dust jacket shows a little shelf wear. It is encased in a plastic sleeve, which has been sellotaped on the inside. (See pictures). The author, Anita Brookner, won the Booker-McConnell Prize for 'Hotel du Lac'. This book, 'A Start in Life', is her debut novel.

As a literary agent she represented Edna O'Brien, John Osborne, Iris Murdoch, Ben Travers, George Orwell, Margaret Drabble, B. S. Johnson, Bernice Rubens and many more. She also produced films, spied for Thai Government and for over five years dated the cousin and best man of Prince Philip. Born in Australia, she spent most of her adult life in London, surfed until she was 96 and went on entertaining people of all ages in her luxurious Hampstead flat until she died.
