Modern paper-tape mend to the length of spine, covers are moderately soiled with faint staining to first few leaves, front cover strengthened at fore-edge with Japanese tissue, one leaf with a long closed tear (archivally mended, without loss), last leaf of text is silked with Japanese tissue, a sound, good only copy. Francis Thomas was a lawyer, member of Congress, and Governor of Maryland from 1841-1844. He married Sally Campbell McDowell, the daughter of Gov. James McDowell of Virginia, and 22 years his junior in 1841. Their marriage was brief, ending in a scandalous, and public, divorce. This publication was Thomas' attempt at defending himself against the resulting scandal. The 'Statement' goes into rather shocking detail about accusations made by both sides. There were subsequent libel suits, during which his lawyer withdrew from the case, citing Thomas' mental state. Thomas was later killed by a locomotive, while walking on the railroad tracks, in 1876.
