Two volumes, octavo; size of bindings: 4 3/4 in. x 7 3/4 in. x 1 in. (thick), Volume 1: engraved titlepage with figures, by J. Visscher; half-title; printed titlepage in black and red with a woodcut device: [32] pp., 1-500 pp.; Volume 2: half-title (Pars Secunda); pp. 501-765 + [189] pp. of addenda & indexes, etc. there are 7 small engravings based, on coins, busts, etc. in Volume 1 & 5 others in Volume 2, most with engraved identications. Bound in full maroon morocco leather, with five raised bands on the spines, and dark brown morocco title labels, gilt-lettered: CORNELLI NEPOS TOM. I. (& II.), and with gilt floral tooling in compartments, triple-line, gilt borders around covers, gilt borders on cover edges, gilt dentelles on leather turn-ins; headbands, green silk bookmarkers bound in; all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. The binding is unsigned, but is of high quality, 19th century workmanship. Both front paste-downs bear an engraved heraldic bookplate: Joh. Mitford Int. Temp. Et. Hosp. Linc. S[-]; Neale, (engraver), 352 Strand; beneath these are more recent, printed book labels in each volume. Engraved titlepage shows some tanning. Light edge wear to covers, a few small scatches or abrasions to the leather surfaces of the covers. Overall, a fine set in a handsome binding. Scarce book; an enlarged & corrected second edition was published in 1773. The scan shows the spines and front cover of volume two. Dibdin, Classics, 1827; Vol. 2, p. 246: "This is a very elaborate edition, [1734 & 1773] founded on that of Bosius, with a collation of many MSS. and former editions. The text of the first [1734] is not formed with sufficient care, and was censured by Heusinger; hence the controversy between him and Van Staveren. [-] Staveren was a very young man when he prepared the first edition. [-]". Weight: 2 1/4 lbs. (Latin text).
