The pair married in 1906 and divorced in 1926, but reunited shortly after the suicide of their son Richard, to whom this volume is dedicated. This copy is inscribed by the authoress 'For Florrie from Anne, March 1944,' and is further signed by her underneath the half-title. Florrie was Florence, the first Lady St. Just, a letter to her is loosely inserted from J G Wilson of John and Edward Bumpus Ltd, thanking her for the loan of the book and expressing a wish for it to be published in the UK.
