No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper folding leaflet. Text and illustration printed in black ink. No date, circa 1892. 4 3/4" x 5 1/2" folded. One leaf folded into three panels and printed front and back, complete. One black-and-white illustration, complete. Leaflet is clean and intact overall but has grease stain on fore-edge of one panel and a few other spots of discoloration and offsetting on the other panels. A Very Good copy. This is a unique folding leaflet that commemorates the original Christopher Columbus statue (titled, Columbus) that was cast in sterling silver and designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), a French sculptor (notably, Bartholdi designed Liberty Enlightening the World, also known as the Statue of Liberty). The main text of this leaflet is relatively brief and only spans three panels or pages. The text commends the artistry of Bartholdi and his Columbus statue and also provides a brief overview of some of Bartholdi's other works and the process of casting the statue in metal. The remaining three panels show a black-and-white illustration of the Columbus statue and the name of Shreveport & Co. of San Francisco. The statue shows Columbus in a stately pose with a coil of line behind his feet, his left hand holding a miniature globe, and his right hand pointing forward; his gaze seems to look with determination at some path onward, the appearance of land, or perhaps the "New World." Bartholdi's sterling silver Columbus statue was commissioned by the Gorham Manufacturing Company, an exhibitor at the 1892 World's Columbian Exposition, as a way for the Providence-based foundry to showcase its skills at silver-casting. Bartholdi completed the finished model in Europe which was then shipped to Gorham in Providence where it was cast in 30,000 ounces of sterling silver. The statue was then transported to Chicago to be displayed at the exposition. After the exposition, the silver Columbus statue was returned to Providence where it was melted down, having served its purpose as an exhibition display piece and a showcase of Gorham. In 1893, another metal casting of Bartholdi's Columbus was made but in bronze. The bronze replica was also manufactured by Gorham and presented as a gift to the city of Providence by the Elmwood Association. The bronze statue was removed by the city's mayor in 2020 and is currently displayed in Johnston, Rhode Island.
