This 1863 publication of "???????" (Stoglav), produced by D. E. Kozhanchikov in Saint Petersburg, is an exceptionally rare edition of this pivotal ecclesiastical text, with fewer than 500 copies printed. This 20.5 x 12.8 cm volume comprises [4], 312, 24 pages and is bound in half-leather. The binding is in fair condition, showing signs of wear. The text block exhibits foxing and water spotting, with occasional pencil notes present throughout the text. "Stoglav" is a seminal compilation of decrees from the 1551 Church Council in Moscow, held during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. It addresses various ecclesiastical and civil issues, organized into 100 chapters. Despite its initial significance, "Stoglav" was later condemned by the 1666-1667 Moscow Church Council. The first edition was published in 1860 in London by Tuebner's Free Russian Press and was banned in Russia. Kozhanchikov's 1863 edition, sourced from a manuscript by noted antiquarian Tikhon Fedorovich Bolshakov, is rarer and remains unaltered in its original language and style.
