Condition: Good. 1953. 306 pages. Red pictorial dust jacket over blue cloth. Pages are clean and bright with a firm binding. Endpapers and page edges are lightly tanned and foxed. Boards are a little rub worn, slight shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are a little bumped. Spine ends are mildly crushed. Tanning to spine and edges. The unclipped dust jacket has moderate edge wear, tears and chips to edges and spine ends. Tanning to spine and edges.

Part of the impressive Dent Medieval Towns Series this book was intended to give a popular history of Rome through its pagan times the trajans and christianity, its rulers, legends, architecture, festivals and people in such a way that it can also be used as a guide book to visitors. Nelly Erichsen (9 December 1862 - 15 November 1918) was an English illustrator and painter. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, she was born into a wealthy professional Danish family. After studies at the Royal Academy of Art in the 1880s, she pursued a successful career as an illustrator and writer, working with a number of publishing firms including J.M. Dent and Macmillan, and jointly publishing travel books with Janet Ross, a prominent member of the Anglo-Tuscan pre-War community. Ref HH5.
