Sonstiges. Condition: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - (Boosey & Hawkes Scores/Books). This publication gathers together three miniatures for string quartet, all composed 'in memoriam' a particular individual. Memento (4 minutes) was written in memory of the composer's friend, David Huntley, the representative of Boosey & Hawkes in the USA, who died in 1994. It was premiered at his memorial concert in New York by the Kronos Quartet. The music is slow, delicate and tentative and is based on the modality of Gaelic lament music and the Gaelic heterophony of psalm-singing in the Hebrides. For Sonny (5 minutes) was written in memory of a little boy, the grandson of a friend, who died a few days after his birth. Throughout, the first violin plays a simple fragment, like a nursery rhyme, repeating over and over again, pizzicato. The other instruments provide an ever-changing context for this little tune, sometimes accompanying it with easy harmonies, sometimes straying into stranger territory. First performed in 2012 at Peterhouse, Cambridge, by the Edinburgh Quartet. The title of Ein Lamplein verlosch ('A little lamp went out') (5 minutes) is a reference to a line in Gustav Mahler's Kindertotenlieder ('Songs on the death of children', after Friedrich Ruckert). The song 'Nun will die Sonn' so hell aufgeh'n' ('Now the sun will rise again as brightly') ends 'Ein Lamplein verlosch in meinem Zelt, heil sei dem Freudenlicht der Welt' ('A little lamp went out in my life, Blessed be the light of joy in the world'), and the strings' mysterious harmonics and shimmering glissandi reflect the atmosphere of Ruckert's lament for the dead. 'Spare melodies hang in the air against floating harmonies, punctuated by gulfs of silence that seem to embody distilled grief' (The Times). First performed in 2018 in the Mendelssohn-Saal at the Gewandhaus, Leipzig, by the Gewandhaus-Quartett.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - (Boosey & Hawkes Scores/Books). Etwas zuruckhaltend was written in 1982 when the composer was a student at the University of Durham. The piece was forgotten until 2009, when MacMillan realised that much within its ideas seemed current and relevant to his recent work. The title comes from Wagner s indication for the final pages of Gotterdammerung, and the work reflects an ongoing interest in this composer which has been reflected at various points since in MacMillan's work. Allusions to motifs from The Ring are never far away. The work ends with a tentative and tense coda, with nods still being made in the direction of The Ring s final Immolation Scene.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - (Boosey & Hawkes Scores/Books). Composed in 2007, this 25-minute work was commissioned by Southbank Centre for its Associate Artists, the Takacs Quartet. A major addition to the contemporary string quartet repertory, the San Francisco Chronical has commented that the work 'operates at the boundary between the physical and the ethereal, between sounds and silence.'.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - (Boosey & Hawkes Scores/Books). Composed in 1988 and revised in 1991, this 28-minute work was commissioned by the University of Glasgow s McEwen Bequest. The composer stated in 1991, 'My first string quartet, Visions of a November Spring, is the peculiar 'odd man out' in my work since it is the nearest thing to an autobiographical statement. The title is an indication that the piece is a celebration of (or comment on) a newly emerging fecundity of expression which seemed to absorb me in the latter part of 1987, and which extended itself through more recent pieces, Busqueda (1988), Into the Ferment (1988) and Tryst (1989). As well as marking the beginning of a particularly prolific time for me, it also marked a fusion of earlier influences and a departure in a style of writing which is both naturally and deliberately more direct and explicit.'.…
