Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition was 1945, copyright was renewed1973 - this is a later reprint but not after 1992. Pictorial boards and unclipped dust jacket protected by archival mylar. Inscribed by the illustrator Garth Williams (1912-1996): "To Paul Horowitz and Ruth Jaffe with very best…wishes. Garth Williams 1992", on front half-title. The original edition of Stuart Little was the first book illustrated by this prolific artist, who estimated that he'd illustrated about 97 children's books, also including Charlotte's Web, the Little House on the Prairie series, and The Rabbit's Wedding, which was almost banned in 1959 because it depicted a rabbit with white fur marrying a rabbit with black fur. As to that book, which he wrote as well as illustrated, Williams was quoted as saying that the book was not written for adults, who "will not understand it, because it is only about a soft furry love and has no hidden message of hate.". Garth Williams (illustrator). Inscribed by Illustrator(s).

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition, first printing, with code "I-U" on copyright page of the author's classic work. Octavo, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Binde…ry, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Boldly signed by E.B. White on a page bound in. In fine condition. An exceptional presentation. "The story had been brewing with White for years as a disconnected series of bedtime tales for his nieces and nephews by the time it came to Harper. There, shepherded by the distinguished editor Ursula Nordstrom and felicitously illustrated [with 87 drawings] by Garth Williams, the book was eventually published-generally to high acclaim The book sounds a resonant note as Stuart undertakes his quest for the beautiful bird, Margalo. And that quest, as White himself noted, 'symbolizes the continuing journey that everybody takesin search of what is perfect and unattainable. This is perhaps too elusive an idea to put into a children's book, but I put it in anyway" (Silvey, 677).

Pulled by hand from the original pen and ink drawing by Garth Williams. Marked "Bon à Tirer" ("ready for press") in pencil by the printer. Thi…s image was acquired directly from the lithographer; Williams added the delicate gray hand-coloring in this image as a guide for the lithographer to follow in coloring the full edition. Williams died in 1996 just after this "ready for press" lithograph was printed; therefore no copies of the final printing of approximately 300 were signed. 11.25 x 15 inches. Fine condition.
