Storico della scienza, Sarton era belga; trasferitosi nel 1915 negli S. U. A., vi si naturalizzò americano. Nel 1940 fu nominato professore e insegnò fino al 1951. Nel 1912 aveva fondato in Belgio Isis, rivista internazionale per la storia e la filosofia della scienza, che continuò poi a pubblicare negli S. U. A. Nel 1936 fondò Osiris, rassegna di studî di storia della scienza e della cultura.È autore di alcuni fondamentali studî di storia della scienza: Introduction to the history of science, 3 voll., Baltimora 1945-48; History of science: I, Ancient science through the golden age of Greece. Harvard 1952; II, Science and culture in the last three centuries b. C., ivi 1959 (postumo).
