First Edition Signed
First edition, first printing, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "J. W. Thornycroft with compliments from the author Simon Lake", with the recipient's ownership slip pasted above. Thornycroft was a member of the British shipbuilding company of the same name making ships for the Royal Navy and the Victorian Naval Forces. Simon Lake (1866-1945) was an American mechanical engineer and naval architect who registered over two hundred patents for advances in naval design. This work is the result of two decades of research into submarines. Loosely inserted is a warrant to document the promotion of John Blair to Second Gunner in 1888. Blair (1854-1936) became a chief gunner in the Victorian Naval Forces but seemingly never served on a Thornycroft ship and never met a member of the Thornycroft family. Blair could have met the recipient of this book in 1928 when J. W. Thornycroft arrived in Brisbane on behalf of his company, though such a meeting is unconfirmed. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in blue, front cover with colour illustrated label, edges cut. Photographic frontispiece, 38 further plates, some printed on recto and verso, folding chart, further charts and illustrations to text. Spine toned, extremities lightly rubbed, minor soiling to cloth, book block slightly shaken, small chip to foot of illustration leaf. A very good copy.
