Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Second Printing of the original Scholastic Press edition. An attractive association copy of the second volume in the Northern Lights trilogy. Mr Pullman being a prodigious and generous signer of books, even signed first printings of this title are by no means that rare but this copy is particularly significant given its recipient. At the title page the author's inscription reads, "With very warm greetings and admiration to Lynne Reid Banks, Philip Pullman, May 2000". The late Ms. Reid Banks was originally best known for her ground-breaking novel The L-Shaped Room before achieving even greater international fame with the modern children's classic, The Indian in the Cupboard. The book is in Fine, fresh condition with just the hint of a slight lean but otherwise firmly bound and tight. The pages remain perfectly white with no age-related toning. The dustjacket is unclipped and without any noticeable creasing or rubbing - there is a very small circular mark or stain to the front flap, else Fine. A pleasing association copy of this modern classic. Inscribed by Author(s).

Otherwise not inscribed and not price-clipped. Whilst Pullman has won the Carnegie Medal, the Guardian Children's Fiction Award, the Smarties Prize and Children's Book of the Year at the British Book Awards it was only the final instalment of the His Dark Materi als trilogy that seems to have garnered him the popular acclaim he undoubtedly deserves, also pleasing the critics as it won the Whitbred Book of the Year Prize - the first Children's book to do so. The trilogy has since been voted one of the top five books ever, by the British public in a national poll. A stage play has already appeared and the movie has already been commissioned with Tom Stoppard writing the screenplay. Signed by Author(s).

Philip Pullman was born on the 16th of October, 1946 in Norwich England. Due to his father's position in the RAF, Pullman frequently traveled, living briefly in the now defunct state of Southern Rhodesia. After his father's death in 1954, Philip Pullman moved to North Wales with his mother and step-father where he spent much of his formative years. It is here that Pullman discovered comic books, in particular Superman and Batman, which alongside the illustrations of William Blake and the work Paradise lost by John Milton, would become great influences on Pullmans works. Perhaps his greatest influence, however, would be his work on school plays during his time teaching. Pullman would start work on 'His Dark Materials' in 1993, releasing 'Northern Lights' in 1995, winning both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, which encouraged him to leave teaching and write full time, as he does into today. Since the release of the trilogy, Pullman has gone on to write 2 volumes of the planned 'the Book of Dust' trilogy, a companion to 'His Dark Materials'. He is also patron to the Palestine Festival of Literature and Shakespeare Schools Festival charitable organizations. 'His Dark Materials' was originally published as a 3-volume trilogy consisting of 'Northern Lights' 'The Subtle Knife' and 'The Amber Spyglass', and first published from 1995-2000. All three volumes are collected in this single-volume collection of the trilogy. The series itself, while marketed as a young-adult series, was written with no particular audience in mind, with elements of fantasy and science-fiction coming together in a tale which explores physics, philosophy, and theology. Outside of the pages, the series is known for Philip Pullman's statement that it is meant to commend humanity for what the poet John Milton coined "original sin" in his work 'Paradise Lost'. This has earned the series some controversy for "criticizing religion" 1384118. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.

Add to basketPhilip Pullman (1995-2000) 'His Dark Materials' trilogy comprised of 'Northern Lights' (1995); 'The Subtle Knife' (1997); and 'The Amber Spyglass' (2000), published by Scholastic in the UK. All three volumes are first editions, first printings, and all three volumes are signed by the author on the title page. The Subtle Knife is in addition inscribed: "with best wishes to Kay". Condition: all near fine condition with minimla shelf wear only as shown. No bookplates, no previous owner's scribbles, no stamps. Internally clean. Books feel unread. The Northern Light dust jacket is the correct first state with the Pratt Street address at the rear flap. All dust jacket are NOT price clipped and near fine. 'Northern Lights' had a very low first print run of reportedly 1,000 copies only, with other sources reporting 2,000 copies. A big chunk of those books ended up in libraries with the usual stamps. Sometimes dealers camouflage this by attaching signed bookplates over the stamps. Philip Pullman won the Carnegie Medal and the Carnegie of Carnegies for 'Northern Lights'. He is also recipient of the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Award. Without any doubt, Pullman is the greatest British children fiction writer of our time. 'His Dark Materials' appeals to children and adults alike, whilst touching on serious subjects such as organised religion, reaching sexual maturity, philosophy and the latest scientific discoveries. Northern Lights was adapted as a Hollywood movie (as 'The Golden Compass') starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig which, however, was mediocre at best. The BBC and HBO were able to complete the adaptation of HDM as a TV-series (2019-22) to critical acclaim. First and Fine.
