First edition, thus, of this installment in the very popular series of illustrated novels issued by Ryutei Tanehiko (1783-1842), considered one of the 10 principal authors of gesaku -- popular illustrated fiction of the late Edo. By the mid-19th-Century he was virtually a household name, and yet despite his celebrity and wide circulation of this many different productions, all are quite scarce, and even individual parts such as this tend to be uncommon. The splendid woodcuts were designed by Utagawa Kunisada II (1823-1880), who took the name Kunisada II in 1850-51 after marrying Kunisada's daughter, and focused on actors, portraits of beautiful geishas, along with erotica, but his popularity waned in the Meiji period. Worldcat locates 1 copy of this individual part (DLC); See: Andrew Lawrence Markus, The Willow in Autumn: Ryutei Tanehiko, 1783-1842 (1992).
