Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). Royal 8vo. 78pp. Black cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine and upper board. Illustrated with ten plates. Free endpapers browned, and with a little light spotting to the reverse of the plate leaves. A tiny dealer plate to the base of the rear pastedown and a light crease to the base of a dozen consecutive leaves. A very good copy. Thirty-six Great War poems (plus one from the Second Boer War), and including Welsh and Latin translations of the title verse (the basis for the hymn 'O Valiant Hearts'). Sir John Stanhope Arkwright, the great-great grandson of Sir Richard Arkwright, was MP for Hereford between 1900-1912. In 1893 he was awarded the Newdigate poetry prize and throughout the First World War he toured the country giving recruitment speeches, writing many of these poems on those travels. Reilly p.42.
