Minime fioriture. Una firma antica al titolo. Bella copia in barbe. Prima edizione, molto rara. Reale, Miscell. Storia patria 64, Memorie storiche intorno all'origine di Beroldo di Sassonia). Cfr. Spreti, 999. Saffroy, I, n. 3975. Manno, I, 2621. D.B.I., cit. Italiano.

A finely bound and elegant manuscript treatise on Campomanes's Tratado de la regalia de amortizacion, written by Manuel de Zevallos y Mier, a presbyter of the University of Seville, for presentation to the Royal Council of Castile in support of Charles III's suppression of the Jesuits. Campomanes (1723-1802) was minister of the…treasury under Charles III and supported the supremacy of the state over the church. His treatise was published in Madrid in 1765 and was written to explain and defend a legal proposal under review by the Council of Castile, which would prevent the church from obtaining excessive land. "Campomanes argued, as others had before him, that since canon law prevented the clergy from selling properties of religious bodies, eventually all property would belong to the church unless a restraint were placed on its acquisition" (Herr, p. 89). These arguments were particularly directed against the Jesuits, whose vast property holdings and assertion of their supremacy over political authorities frequently brought them into conflict with rulers across Europe. The council failed to pass the law, but Campomanes's work proved popular and went through several editions and translations. In April 1767, Charles III expelled the Jesuits from all Spanish territories and confiscated their property. The Jesuits had dominated the University of Seville, and with their expulsion the university had to be substantially restructured. Zevallos y Mier's treatise supports Campomanes's work and reforms. As Campomanes's text provided a justification for the king's actions, it is clear that this manuscript was produced to show the university's loyalty to the new order and support for his policy. Zevallos y Mier has calligraphically signed the manuscript and dated it 11 October 1767. It has not been published. The manuscript was afterwards in the library of Feliciano Ramírez de Arellano, 1st Marqués de la Fuensanta del Valle (1826-1896), and bears his bookplate. A jurist, politician, and historian, he built a substantial library, founded the Sociedad de Bibliófilos Españoles, and published catalogues of rare books and manuscripts relating to the history of Spain. Richard Herr, Rural Change and Royal Finances in Spain at the End of the Old Regime, 2023. Folio (297 x 191 mm), ff. [10], 96. Paper watermarked with two lions supporting a crowned shield with cross above the initials "SP" and numeral 2. Contemporary red morocco for presentation, spine with gilt sceptre devices, gilt arms of Charles III on front cover and papal arms on rear cover, both surrounded by Agnus Dei devices within elaborate and richly gilt frame, green silk ties, four-coloured block-print endpapers, gilt edges. Very light stains to binding and initial and final leaves, else a very attractive and well-preserved copy.

Printed document, completed in manuscript. Signed by Samuel M. Williams. 6 x 8 inches. A rare imprint from the San Felipe de Austin press of Godwin Brown Cotten, and a variant printing of Streeter Texas 9. This is effectively the earliest obtainable Texas imprint, since any earlier ones are only surmised or exist in a few copies… in institutions. It is now extremely rare in the marketplace. "These grants were the foundation of the colonization of Texas" (Streeter). This document reflects one of the four essential steps in the colonization process, being the empresario's certification stating that the immigrant (in this case a widow named Frances Manifee) had been admitted as a member of Austin's colony. The next step would be to present this certificate to the commissioner charged with issuing land titles in the Colony. This document is signed in manuscript by Samuel M. Williams, a close associate of Stephen F. Austin. Streeter refers to a similar form in his collection dated June 2, 1831, also signed by Samuel M. Williams. "For thirteen years Williams was Austin's lieutenant; he wrote deeds, kept records, and directed colonial activities during the empresario's absences" (New Handbook of Texas). This is apparently a variant printing of Streeter Texas 9, most definitely a new type setting, as it exhibits more than ten slight textual differences from the earlier document. The most notable difference is the addition of a "3" where the date appears on the printed form; previously the partially-printed date read "18" followed by blank space - in this iteration of the document the date reads "183" followed by space for completion of the date. In Streeter Texas, Streeter refers to a similar form in his collection, most certainly the same printing as the present example: "An original certificate of admission in my collection, filled out by Samuel M. Williams for 'Empresario Austin' on June 2, 1831, is practically identical with the one entered here, except that the printed part of the date reads '183-' instead of '18-.'" A much inferior copy, with loss on the top margin, sold at Sotheby's in the Texas Independence Collection sale on June 18, 2004 for $30,000 including premium. A extraordinarily rare variant printing of a foundational Texas document. Streeter Texas 9; New Handbook of Texas 6, p.988; Eberstadt 162:39 Small loss along old fold (affecting a few letters). Else very good. Housed in a morocco backed slipcase Printed document, completed in manuscript. Signed by Samuel M. Williams. 6 x 8 inches. Signed.
