Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Lou Lichtvelt, inscribed, signed, and dated, using his pen name, "Albert Helman". Sharp, bright with original publisher's laminate over the paper covers. A history of a two hundred year old company in Suriname, "C. KERSTEN & CO." "Albert Helman". Lou Lichtveld was born in Paramaribo…, Suriname into an elite family. At the age of twelve, he went to the Netherlands to become a priest at boarding school Rolduc in Kerkrade. He completed this training after a short time and returned to Suriname. At the Paulus School in Paramaribo, he completed a music study. After that he worked as an organist and composer. He gained notability in 1923 when he published the poetry collection De glorende dag (The Dawning Day)." At the time of the publishing of this history, In 1968, Lichtveld would have been 65. His attitudes have changed: In 1926; his debut novel Zuid-Zuid-West ("South-South-West") describes the exploitation of Suriname by the Dutch colonizer. wikipedia: "In 1954 and during the 1950s, the Dutch government strongly opposed the idea of full independence for its former colony. Suriname had been given far-reaching autonomy in order to keep it within the kingdom. This changed in the 1960s, especially after the Netherlands New Guinea crisis of 1962, and the riots in Curaçao in 1969. In the 1960s virtually all parties in the Dutch parliament began to support the idea of full independence for Suriname as soon as possible. The former colonies in the Caribbean had become a fiscal burden and the Dutch government had lost control over their internal administration. The Dutch Labour Party added to these political and economic reasonings an ideological argument: colonialism was considered wrong and all its remnants, such as the inclusion of Surname and the Netherlands Antilles in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, should be eliminated.". rare archival photos (illustrator). Contact seller5-star seller(Washington, D.C.): Conservation International, June, 1998. Cover title, unpaginated, about 50 leaves, printed on the recto, only. In a plastic folder. Congratulatory text and photocopies of many media stories about the Suriname decision to establish one of the largest and most pristine wilderness areas in the world , something…which the group had heavily promoted. E.O. Wilson, who was on the board of Conservation International (C.I.), received this from the media department. Laid in is a typed letter, signed Peter , on C.I. letterhead from the Chairman and CEO Peter A. Seligman. He happily reports that the recent New York event was a great success, they are planning similar event in San Francisco, he hopes Wilson can also attend there, as he can help assure the event gets a top-rate audience . He encloses three documents for review : the report of media coverage described above, a video tape of coverage by several TV news departments (not present here), and a memorandum summary of the recent meeting I attended at The World Bank with the CEOs of the timber industry which is included here a three page memo and three photocopy pages of two magazine articles covering unsustainable logging issues. All are in Fine condition.
