(Süddeutsche Zeitung). - Patricia Highsmith (eigentlich Mary Patricia Plangman) (* 19. Januar 1921 in Fort Worth, Texas; 4. Februar 1995 in Locarno, Schweiz) war eine US-amerikanische Schriftstellerin. Highsmith schrieb auch unter dem Pseudonym Claire Morgan. Leben und Leistungen: Patricia Highsmith schrieb vor allem anspruchsvolle, psychologisch tiefgründige Kriminalromane sowie Kurzgeschichten. Im Vordergrund ihrer Werke steht nicht die Aufklärung von Verbrechen (Whodunit"), sondern die Umstände (Whydunit"), die einen unauffälligen Durchschnittsmenschen ins Verbrechen treiben. Sie interessierte sich weniger für die moralischen Aspekte ihrer Geschichten als für das Innenleben ihrer Protagonisten. Wesentliche Anregung bekam sie durch das Buch The Human Mind (nicht auf Deutsch erschienen) des deutsch-amerikanischen Psychiaters Karl A. Menninger, das sie im elterlichen Bücherschrank fand. In diesem Buch werden im populären Stil Personen mit den unterschiedlichsten psychischen Defekten geschildert. Ihre literarischen Vorbilder sind u. a. Dostojewski, Nietzsche, Poe, Conrad, Kafka, Julien Green, Sartre und Camus. Neben ihrem erzählerischen Werk hat Highsmith 1966 den Essay Plotting and writing suspense fiction (eine Art Werkstattbericht) veröffentlicht. 1958 illustrierte sie das Kinderbuch Miranda the Panda is on the Veranda, den Text schrieb ihre Freundin Doris Sanders. 1995 veröffentlichte der Diogenes Verlag einen Band mit Zeichnungen von Patricia Highsmith. Sporadisch versuchte sich Highsmith auch an Drehbüchern, Theater- und Radiobearbeitungen, jedoch nur mit geringem Erfolg. Zahlreiche Romane und Storys von Highsmith wurden für Kino oder Fernsehen adaptiert. Außerdem gibt es einige Bearbeitungen ihrer Werke für Rundfunk und Theater. . Patricia Highsmith wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet (siehe unten). Die populäre amerikanische Autorenvereinigung Mystery Writers of America (MWA) nominierte sie gleich dreimal: 1951 mit Strangers on a Train in der Kategorie Best First Novel, 1956 mit The Talented Mr. Ripley in der Kategorie Best Novel und 1963 mit der Kurzgeschichte The Terrapin in der Kategorie Best Short Story. Die begehrte Edgar-Allan-Poe-Statue der MWA blieb ihr jedoch zeitlebens verwehrt. 1991 tauchte ihr Name auf der Vorschlagsliste für den Literatur-Nobelpreis auf, die Wahl fiel aber auf die Südafrikanerin Nadine Gordimer. . Wirkung: In den USA war sie trotz der frühen Erfolge nicht so geschätzt wie in Europa, wo sie besonders in Deutschland, Frankreich und Spanien viele Leser fand. Erst seit kurzem wird sie auch in den USA von einem breiteren Publikum wiederentdeckt. Immer wieder hatte sie mit dem Schubladendenken von Verlegern und Kritikern zu kämpfen. Für eine Kriminalautorin war sie manchen zu literarisch, für die Literaten war sie wiederum zu sehr Kriminalautorin. Selbst als sie bereits eine etablierte Schriftstellerin war, wurden ihre Bücher immer wieder von Verlagen abgelehnt oder aufgefordert, die Bücher umzuschreiben oder zu kürzen. Dagegen wurde sie von vielen europäischen Schriftstellerkollegen wie Peter Handke, Graham Greene und Gabriele Wohmann sehr geschätzt. Romane und Erzählungen von Patricia Highsmith wurden bisher in 25 Sprachen übersetzt, darunter die meisten wichtigen europäischen Sprachen und ins Japanische. Die ersten Übersetzungen ins Deutsche erschienen erst Anfang der sechziger Jahre beim Rowohlt Verlag, seit 1968 erschienen ihre Werke im Diogenes Verlag, Zürich, der seit 1980 weltweiter literarischer Agent ihrer Werke ist und seit 1993 Eigentümer der Weltrechte an ihrem Gesamtwerk. Werke: Patricia Highsmith hat 22 Romane publiziert, davon fünf mit der Hauptfigur Tom Ripley. Daneben veröffentlichte sie seit ihrer Studienzeit eine Vielzahl von Storys in den verschiedensten Zeitschriften. Viele davon wurden zu ihren Lebzeiten in insgesamt sieben Sammelbänden veröffentlicht. In ihrem Nachlass fanden sich viele unveröffentlichte bzw. nur in Zeitschriften und nicht in Buchform veröffentlichte Storys sowie zahlreiche Entwürfe. Die wichtigsten Storys aus dem Nachlass wurden 2002 in zwei Bänden bei Diogenes veröffentlicht, auf Englisch im gleichen Jahr in einer einbändigen Ausgabe. Der Diogenes-Verlag startete 2002 eine auf 31 Bände angelegte Werkausgabe, die von Paul Ingendaay und Anna von Planta herausgegeben wird.
