Sutton, who served in the New York State Assembly (1965-1966). He became the highest ranking African-American elected official in New York City after being elected Manhattan Borough president (1966-1977) and ran for mayor in 1977. Previously he was active in the Civil Right Movement as a Freedom Rider and lawyer to Malcolm X and his wife.
