The text block is in near fine condition, with no marks, tears, or dog-ears. Tight binding. Not a library book. No bookplate. The cover is in near fine condition. 8 ¾ x 5 ¾, 114 pages, 11 ounces. XX The novel begins with a portrait of young Carl and his family. Because of all the exciting stories about the rich farmland of Texas, Carl and his sister Christina set sail from Southern Sweden after celebrating Walpurgis Night. They arrive at Castle Garden and after being admitted into the United States, they explore New York City. They next board a steamer which will arrive in Galveston, Texas in four days. Warmly greeted by a Swedish pastor, they are soon on a train bound for central Texas. Christina stays in Austin to work for the family that paid her travel expenses and Carl continues on to his brother?s farm near Brushy (eventually to be New Sweden) in northeast Travis County 25 miles from Austin. The young boy must learn to deal with new things in his surroundings: getting sunburned, encountering crop-destroying grasshoppers, killing a rattlesnake, and eating turnips. On Sundays he goes with his brother?s family to a nearby Evengelical Lutheran church with services in Swedish. Carl?s brother raises cotton and is doing well enough to plan on buying more land. Carl works on a neighbor?s farm on Saturdays for money, but he soon realizes that he will need to learn English in order to do well in this new country. There are many new things to learn: picking and baling cotton, taking it to the cotton gin for money, shopping in Georgetown, getting more appropriate clothes for the Texas climate, exploring a cave for gold with a new friend Gusten, watching a cattle drive come through Georgetown, trying to ride a wild horse, getting homesick, learning English, celebrating Thanksgiving with neighbors, being taunted by ?American? boys, enjoying a traditional Swedish Christmas with his brother and sister-in-law and sister Christina, selling his carved birds in Georgetown, and successfully learning to deal with local storekeepers. By the end of the book Carl feels confident that he will do well in Texas. A work of fiction, HEJ TEXAS ?was inspired by the life of Claus Munson who came to Texas as a 15-year-old in 1880.? XX The author Sammye Munson has taught in the Houston Independent School District and Houston Community College. She is the author of other books about Mexican-Americans in Texas and a young adult novel Take My Hand. Signed by Author(s).

Condition: Fine. Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Screech Owls, 1995. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Fine. 12mo - over 6þ - 7þ" tall. TV TIE-IN: This series of novels was the basis for the 2001 TV series of the same name. SYNOPSIS: Someone is out to steal the Stanley Cup - and only the Screech Owls stand between the thieves and their prize! Travis, Nish, and the rest of the Screech Owls have come to Toronto for the biggest hockey tournament of their lives - only to find themselves in the biggest mess of their lives. First Nish sprains his ankle falling down the stairs at the CN Tower. Later, key members of the team get caught shoplifting. And during a tour of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Travis overhears two men plotting to swipe the priceless Stanley Cup and hold it for ransom! Can the Screech Owls do anything to save the most revered trophy in the land? And can the team also rise to the challenge on the ice and play their best hockey ever? The Night They Stole the Stanley Cup is the second book in the Screech Owls Series. Roy MacGregor has been involved in hockey all his life. Growing up in Huntsville, Ontario, he played minor hockey, including several years against Bobby Orr, who was playing in nearby Parry Sound. He later returned to the game when he and his family settled in Ottawa, where he works for the Ottawa Citizen and is the Southam National Sports Columnist. He still plays old-timers hockey and has been a minor-hockey coach for more than a decade. Roy MacGregor is the author of several classics in the literature of hockey. Home Game, which he wrote with Ken Dryden, is a former No. 1 national bestseller. He also wrote the game's best-known novel, The Last Season, and had another bestseller in 1993 with Road Games: A Year in the Life of the NHL. His most recent work of adult non-fiction is The Home Team: Fathers, Sons and Hockey. He has also written books about Native leaders and the Ottawa Valley. Roy MacGregor is now a senior columnist for the National Post. 113 pp.
