Allegro -- Daß die dritte Symphonie von Brahms im Sommer 1883 während seines Aufenthaltes in Wiesbaden ihre endgültige Fassung erhalten hat, steht fest. Dagegen ist man in bezug auf die Entstehungszeit der einzelnen Teile, unter denen sich die lieblichen Mittelsätze von den gewaltigen Ecksätzen sehr abheben, auf Vermutungen angewiesen. Aus der brieflichen Äußerung von Brahms an seinen Verleger Fritz Simrock vom 15. September 1883: "Wenn ich etwa noch einmal Notenblätter aus meiner Jugendzeit finde, so will ich sie Ihnen auch schicken" glaubt Max Kalbeck, sein wohlunterrichteter Biograph, schließen zu dürfen, daß für den ersten Satz auf ein Jugendwerk zurückgegriffen worden sei. Meiner Meinung nach braucht jene Briefstelle durchaus nicht auf die dritte Symphonie bezogen zu werden. Sehr viel Wahrscheinlichkeit hat aber die Vermutung Kalbecks, daß die beiden Mittelsätze aus der Musik zu Goethes Faust stammen, mit der sich Brahms 1880/81 auf Anregung Dingelstedts beschäftigt hat. Da dieser jedoch nicht dazu kam, seine beabsichtigte Bühnenausgabe jener Dichtung herzustellen, so gab bekanntlich Brahms seine musikalischen Faust-Pläne leider auf, aus denen wahrscheinlich seine "Tragische Ouvertüre" stammt. Von dem Schlußsatz der Symphonie nimmt Kalbeck an, daß er unter dem Eindruck des Schillingschen seiner Vollendung damals entgegengehenden Niederwalddenkmals als Huldigung des 50 jährigen Tondichters an Deutschland entstanden sei. D DUR VON BRAHMS -- Noch während Brahms an dem vierhändigen Klavierauszug seiner ersten Symphonie die ihn 15 Jahre lang beschäftigt hatte, arbeitete, begann er im Sommer 1877 in dem lieblichen Pörtschach am Wörther See in Kärnten die Symphonie in D-Dur, die im Gegensatz zu der beinahe tragischen in C-Moll einen sehr lieblichen, ja heiteren Charakter aufweist. Als er dann im Herbst nach Lichtenthai bei Baden-Baden gekommen war, konnte Klara Schumann an Hermann Levi am 24. September schreiben: "Brahms ist in guter Stimmung, sehr entzückt von seinem Sommeraufenthalt und hat, im Kopfe wenigstens, eine neue Symphonie in D-Dur fertig - den ersten Satz hat er aufgeschrieben. Sie muß ihn aber damals noch nicht gekannt haben, da sie schreibt, dieser Satz sei "ganz elegischen Charakters". Offenbar hatte Brahms dies zu ihr im Spaße gesagt, wie er es denn überhaupt liebte, seine Freunde etwas aufzuziehen. So schrieb er an seinen Verleger Fritz Sitnrock, dem er auch diese Symphonie überließ, obwohl sich u. a. Aug. Cranz in Hamburg darum beworben hatte, am 22. November 1877: "Die neue Symphonie ist so melancholisch, daß Sie es nicht aushalten. Ich habe noch nie so was Trauriges, Molliges geschrieben; die Partitur muß mit Trauerrand erscheinen.
