Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Early US Imprint. Original, full leather binding. Brown leather or sheep, unadorned and in rough condition. Front board hangs on by just one fragile cord. Rear cover well-attached. Leather spine faded, chipped at the bottom. Maroon title label, "Chesterfield Life." Edges, corners of boards scuffed and worn, as are the boards themselves. Front free endpaper detached but present. Second blank page a bit loose. TItle page has the name "Joseph Bass" written at the top. It was a fairly common name in the early US, so I have not been able to ascertain exactly who it was. (John Adams had a servant with that name & that seems to dominate the google searches). 388 pages. Toning throughout. A single leaf, pages 373-374, detached but set in place. Same for 209/210. There are three places where flower have been pressed between the pages & are still here. At page 373, I can see a small straight-pin deep in the gutter. Please email with questions or to request photos. Evans 14472. A nice early American imprint of an oft-quoted, seldom read title. This is the first US edition. It was first published in England in 1774.

The first American edition of the foundational physics text, first published in Latin in 1687. Andrew Motte's 1729 translation was reprinted in 1803 and 1819 in Britain, but subsequent 19th century editions were printed only in the United States and Germany. The New York-based publisher Daniel Adee deposited a copyright for the Principia in 1846, then printed five issues between 1848 and 1850. A contemporary notice in the Scientific American declared: "For a long time the 'Principia' was kept far out of the reach of the mere English Scholar, as if Newton had written it exclusively for the classical student and philosopher. It was a scarce book when printed in the Latin language; it is now, thanks to the spirit of an American publisher, printed in our mother tongue, and should find a place in every family library.".
