Condition: Gut. 180 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband berieben und leicht bestoßen, Schutzumschlag vergilbt und etwas abgenutzt, insgesamt guter Zustand / Binding rubbed and lightly bumped, dust jacket yellowed and somewhat worn, overall good condition. - Tacitus is an author who is of particular interest to our own times. He poses the question of what is the correct course of action for an individual member of society living under a tyranny a question that is relevant whether the tyranny is that of a single military despot, a foreign power, or a machine-dominated system of technology. On stylistic grounds, too, Tacitus has a special relevance today, at a time when literary taste has moved completely away from the balanced clauses and the verbosity of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to something more compressed and epigrammatic. In this book there are two chapters dealing with the early work of Tacitus, and one on the information given by Tacitus about Britain, in which inevitably the Agricola plays the most important part. There is an examination of how Tacitus varied his style according to his subject-matter, an estimate of his success as a military historian, and a discussion on the extent to which his style was influenced by the great prose-writers of the first century B.C. Finally, there is a chapter on the attitude taken towards Tacitus by various literary and political schools of thought in Europe during the centuries following the Renaissance.
