Trade paperback. Morris, WIlcox (cover art). (illustrator). 193 p. This is the story of an immigrant's learning to let go. With at times savage satire and a constantly gentle understing of the human condition, the author tells the story of Asa, a person of color born in the Caribbean, who comes to American to grow into a successful professor at a premiere historically clack institution. Asa and his wife, Auset, live through a year of signicant events. They are tested and ultimately triumph, both becoming Americans in the fullest sense of the term. Trinidad & Tobago-born Ian Isidore Smart is a serious scholar, but he is just as serious a "shit-talker. " Henry Louis Gates, Jr. established a fixed place for signifying in the academy's literary hall of canons & Smart, as scholar, has done the same for mamaguying. Now as creator of fiction, he weds theory to praxis producing this tall tale for our times that is steeped in the scintillating, shit-talking signifying of a gutsy griot-pelting "picong" left, right & center. Set in Washington, D.C. & Port-of-Spain, this first novel is an action-packed gem of world literature. Once you pick it up, it will be hard to put it down. This is the author's first novel. Port-of-Spain; Very good. No dust jacket as issued. Signed by author. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Some edge soiling. First edition. Stated. Presumed first printing.
