Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. These essays face squarely the problems of teachers who do not want to teach, and of students who do not want to learn, of racism and sexism in the classroom, and of the gift of freedom that is, for Hooks, the teacher's most important goal. Raising many concerns central to the field of critical pedagogy, Hooks connects them to feminist thought, an area that continues to be underrepresented in work on teaching. At the same time, she also reshapes feminist thinking, bringing to it a vigorous engagement with race and class. One of America's leading black intellectuals shares her philosophy of the classroom, offering ideas about teaching that fundamentally rethink democratic participation. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Trade Paperback. Condition: VG+. No Additional Printings Noted. SIGNED - Wrappers. Yellow spine and rear cover with author photo, yellow front cover with inset artwork are all clean and bright. Book has just a trace of rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and at the very tips of the outside corners. Spine has been very faintly lightened by sun - lettering is all clear and easy to read and the difference is subtle enough that it would likely go unnoticed by someone who wasn't looking for it. Signed and inscribed on the title page by the author in black pen: "Wilfred! / to teaching that / transforms - / bell hooks." This book came from the collection of Wilfred D. Samuels, who was Associate Professor of English and Ethnic Studies and the former Director of the African American Studies program at the University of Utah. Binding is straight and tight. Previous owner has made some notes on the blank bottom half of the last page, but pages are otherwise clean, white, and crisp. 216 pages. Rare with the author's signature. Signed by the Author.
