Peter Goodchild CChem FRSC (born 1939) is a former BBC television editor, who notably edited Horizon and who initiated the popular 1980s BBC science series Q.E.D. Edward Teller (1908 - 2003) was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist known colloquially as "the father of the hydrogen bomb." Throughout his life, Teller was respected for his scientific ability but criticized for his difficult interpersonal relations and volatile personality. Dr. Strangelove was the mad scientist in Director Stanley Kubrick's 1964 black comedic movie, which starred Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, and Sterling Hayden. Teller was an early member of the Manhattan Project, which created the first atomic bomb. SUPERIOR COPY: Tight, bright, clean cloth and pages. Illustrations. Appendix. Notes. Index. Ex-library with usual library markings, DJ in plastic sleeve, DJ pasted to boards, book cocked, edges worn. Stanley Blumberg was a noted science writer who published widely on technical and policy subjects. Gwinn Owens was a writer, editorialist, and correspondent long associated with the Westinghouse Broadcasting Group. Derived from a New York Times review of The Life and Times of Edward Teller. By Stanley A. Blumberg and Gwinn Owens. If the tragedy of our age, as Ralph Lapp laments, "is that at the very time when science has reached the position where it can enormously improve man's life, its main thrust has been turned to destructive applications," then Teller's career embodies that tragedy. An exceptionally gifted physicist, Teller was turned by the exigencies of World War II from the pursuit of knowledge to its military application. The cold war transformed this temporary diversion into a permanent preoccupation. The results of his work helped to create the macabre international system we have lived with for more than two decades. Winston Churchill described its essential nature in 1955 to the House of Commons: "Then it may well be that we shall, by a process of sublime irony, have reached a stage in this story where Martin Sherwin, member of the history department at Princeton University, is the author of "A World Destroyed: The Atomic Bomb and the Grand Alliance," winner of the Stuart Bernath prize. safety will be the sturdy child of terror, and survival the twin brother of annihilation." Teller's major contribution to the arms race is a multimegaton hydrogen bomb, a weapon he pursued almost from the moment in the autumn of 1941 when he heard Enrico Fermi speculate that a fission explosion might be used to initiate a fusion reaction. He brooded about this problem during the war while working on the atomic bomb at Los Alamos, became increasingly bitter about a lack of support for it afterwards, and never forgave the H bomb's opponents, especially J. Robert Oppenheimer, for their opposition. When President Truman endorsed thermonuclear research program in January 1950, several months after the Soviet Union's unexpected first atomic bomb, Teller committed his prestige to the development of an H bomb. On May 8, 1951, the U.S. ignited the first thermonuclear reaction on earth. Teller's goal was then within reach. For his contributions to the H bomb Teller is clearly of interest to historians of technology; for his influence on national security policy during the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations he is a historical figure important to all. Teller's influence is recognized by those who lament it as well as by those who applaud it. In the judgment of the distinguished Nobel Prize winning physicist I. I. Rabi, "He's a danger to all that's important. I do really believe it would have been a better world without Teller." To Nelson Rockefeller, on the other hand, an early advocate of Teller's bomb shelter program, Teller is "an individual of energy, dedication, and genius so extraordinary as to . . . leave me eternally in his debt for the services he has rendered mankind.".
