Notable foxing and tanning to endpapers and page edges. Presentation plate to front endpaper. Some gutter cracking. Mild wear and bumping to spine, board edges and corners, with scuffing and marking to boards. Minor tanning to spine. Book has a backward lean.

Grey cloth heavily decorated with frames and borders in darker grey all over the front cover and on the spine, with a vignette colour illustration on paper laid on to the front cover. Condition very good, corners and spine ends slightly rubbed, Church attendance prize label on the front end-paper, other than this the contents are very clean. With colour frontispiece and four full page black and white illustrations by P. B. Hickling.

There is an undated Sunday School plate inside the front cover, there is foxing on first and last 20 pages and some in between, thick cream pages, tight binding and clean fawn board covers with a cameo illustration 'tipped-in' on the front (i.e. glued on extra). One colour plate as frontispiece: "Marsaili lit the Love candle; then as the younger girls knelt, she recited some verses" and 3 more b&w full-page plates. The second in the Torment series focusses on Tormentilla Grant who at 16 attends an all-boys school and belongs to a Campfire group.
