PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR, KENNETH F ASCOTT. Inscription reads, 'To Mr ------ -----/With my best wishes/and thanks/From Kenneth F Ascott/30th May, 2001'. Wadhurst is a market town in East Sussex. If the education system today is fraught with troubles, imagine the difficulties in running the village school in Victorian times. First of all, the premises were inadequate and ill-heated, the meagre staff were poorly supplemented by pupil-teachers with little or no experience, the pupils were poor and often had to miss school because their were ill and often had to miss school because they were ill, or the weather made the journey impossible, or it was hop-picking time. This remarkable book describes how, in spite of all this, the teachers of Wadhurst managed to develop education far beyond the 3Rs, and this was reflected in the life of the whole village. Kenneth Ascott, himself a former member of staff in a later Wadhurst school, has drawn on teachers' logbooks and people's memories for this wonderfully detailed and colourful hsitory of Wadhurst education up to the Great War. With Appendix and Indexes. A near fine copy of a SCARCE first edition, first printing SIGNED BY AUTHOR, KENNETH F ASCOTT. Presentation Copy Inscribed & Signed By Author.

1st. This is a seminal 19th-century chemistry book by Charles Adolphe Wurtz, one of the key figures in organic chemistry and atomic theory. The work explores the role of atomic theory in the broader conception of the world, emphasizing its significance to modern chemistry. It includes addresses such as the Discours dâinauguration at the Association Française pour lâAvancement des Sciences (Lille, 1871), and laudatory essays (Ăloge) on notable chemists Laurent, Gerhardt, and Soubeiran, offering insights into the intellectual climate of 19th-century science. The book is bound in a period half-leather binding, with mottled boards and gilt-lettered spine (âWurtz â" ThĂ orie des Atomesâ). Decorative marbled endpapers remain intact. The text is clean overall, with only minor foxing on some leaves. Importantly, the book includes an authorial inscription âhommage respectueux A. W.âÂon the half-title, which strongly suggests a presentation copy by Wurtz himself. This greatly enhances its rarity and value. . Pages: Generally clean and crisp with occasional foxing or light spotting, consistent with age. Endpapers: Marbled, intact, with some age toning. Overall Condition: Very Good â" for a 19th-century chemistry work, especially with intact binding and inscription. Half-leather (spine and corners) with marbled paper boards. Rubbing and wear to extremities but structurally sound. Spine gilt still legible.

First edition of this monumental nineteenth-century French fencing manual. Octavo, written in French, bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, crossed foils and armored helmet decorations stamped in gilt to the corners of the front and rear panels, top edge gilt, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, double marbled endpapers, tissue-guarded vignette of a coat of arms, original wrappers, ribbon bound in, illustrated with twenty drawings made from life by Th. GuĂ rin. Boldly signed by Gomard on the authentication page to the front which states, "Any copy that is not bearing the authorâs signature (or mark) will be considered counterfeit.â In the 19th century fencing manuals were often copied, so Gomard added his signature (âgriffeâ) as an authenticity mark. Copies without it were considered unauthorized reproductions. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. La thĂ orie de lâescrime (1845) by A.-J.-J. Possellier, known as Gomard, is an important nineteenth-century treatise on the theory and practice of fencing, reflecting the codification of the sport during a period when it remained both a martial discipline and a gentlemanly art. Written by a prominent French fencing master who taught at elite institutions such as the Ăcole Polytechnique, the work presents fencing technique through a systematic method grounded in observation, pedagogy, and the principles of classical swordsmanship. The book also includes a historical introduction surveying earlier fencing manuals from the sixteenth century onward, situating contemporary practice within a longer European tradition of the art des armes. Illustrated with instructional plates, the volume exemplifies the nineteenth-century effort to formalize fencing as a disciplined system of movement, strategy, and instruction that would ultimately influence the development of modern sport fencing.
