Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Second Edition; unknown. Amazon attributes this edition to Appleton, and perhaps one exists, but the publisher of this copy of the second edition is Thomas Y. Crowell. (Appleton published the first American edition. ) It is not dated, but the Preface is dated 1874. This book is in good shape for its age, with light fading to the spine but sound boards and binding. There is a little fraying to the top of the spine, quite mild. There are no markings or inscriptions. The title page has a short tear at the top. The tissue guard of the frontispiece, a portrait of the author, is in excellent shape (a rarity). The pages are toned but neither brittle nor foxed. There are many wonderful illustrations. Altogether a nice collectible for the Darwin fan. Fast shipping, with tracking number provided. ; 7.5x5x1.5 inches; 688 pages.
