  • Seller image for Collection of Thirty Original Photographs of Native American Subjects Including Kiowa, Comanche and Wichita by the Lenny and Sawyers Photographic Firm in Oklahoma Territory, c. 1890s-1900 for sale by Auger Down Books, ABAA/ILAB

Condition: Near Fine. In the years following the Land Run of 1889, which opened land in Indian Territory to Euro-American settlement, professional and amateur photographers alike moved to the region. Their motives varied, with some attempting to document the vanishing indigenous culture and others trying to capitalize on the Euro-American demand for photographs of Native Americans in both traditional and western attire. Some studios would use single sets of props for different tribes. Despite these issues, the images from the period do illuminate the period of acculturation and displacement in the history of the Southern Plains Indians tribes, and also provide a record of the motives of the Euro-American photographers behind the camera. William J. Lenny and William L. Sawyers were photographers working out of Purcell in the years immediately following the land rush. They photographed the tribes on the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache and Wichita-Caddo reservations. Lenny was a field photographer and likely took most of the photographs, while Sawyer managed the studio. Offered here are a very extensive group of photographs taken by the duo - twenty-seven in total - giving a visual record of the Kiowa and other tribes during this period. Some of these images - though not these copies - were included in the Museum of the Great Plains Exhibition In Citizen's Garb, and we have included their reference numbers where applicable. Overall an uncommonly large group in fine condition, with some fading. From the collection of Forest Fenn, the noted Santa Fe gallerist. 1. Indian Police / Kiowa and Comanches [Supplied Title]. The images shows seven mounted police officers, with the one furthest to the left appearing to be Euro-American. 2. Arko, Captain of the Indian Police (Comanche.) [Supplied Title] Indian police commonly earned $8-$10 per month to work on the reservation, where their duties included expelling intruders, bringing children to the schools, curbing crime and preventing the sale of alcohol. He's dressed traditionally including a single feather worn as a headdress. [In Citizen's Garb 32] 3. Chief Tow-Wac-A-Ny and Wives. Wichitas. [Supplied Title]. A portrait of 'Towacany Jim,' a famous military scout, posed with a Navajo-style blanket along with his two wives. The women are wearing purchased shoes common in this period. He earned $10 per month as leader of the Indian Police and traveled to Washington, D.C. on diplomatic missions. Fine contrast. 4. Big Tree's Boy and Girl. Kiowas. [Supplied Title] A portrait of two children of the chief Big Tree. The pair wear traditional dress. Faded. Big Tree. 5. Kiowa Chief. [Supplied Title] A portrait of A'Do-Ette, or Big Tree, the Kiowa chief. Fine contrast. 6. [Portrait of A'Do-Ette] . He wears the same costume used by the photographers for various other tribal leaders, including a large headdress. Faded. 7. Chief Big Tree's Daughters. (Kiowas.) [Supplied Title] The image shows two girls identified as Alma (left) and Leena (right). Alma wears a dress of dark buckskin. Both girls have beaded bags, known as "Strike-a-Light" bags hanging from belts. 8. Lone Wolf. Kiowa Chief. [Supplied Title] A photograph of Mamay-day-te, or Lone Wolf the Younger, in the same costume used for O'Do-Ette's portrait and others. Some fading. 9. Photograph of Laura Dunmore, or Laura Pedrick. Dunmore was a graduate of Carlisle School and sister of Chief Aptone. She is pictured here with a parasol, tartan cloth and tinkling cone earrings, providing a striking study in fashion during this period. Fine contrast. 10. Photograph of a Camp Scene in Summer on a Reservation. This scene, perhaps a Kiowa-apache camp, contains a tipi made of canvas instead of hides. A man in an expensive set of purchased clothing sits in the foreground. Excellent contrast. [In Citizens Garb 9] 11. Photograph of a Camp Scene in Summer. A variant of our no. 10, showing the same scene from a different angle. Excellent contrast. 12. Chief Wild Horse [Supplied Title] Title writ.

  • Seller image for The Right of Dominion, and Property of Liberty, whether Natural, Civil, or Religious. Wherein are comprised the begining and continuance of dominion by armes; the excellency of monarchy, and the necessity of taxes, with their moderation. As also the necessity of his Highness acceptation of the empire, averred and approved by presidents of praeterit ages, with the firm settlement of the same against all forces whatsoever. for sale by Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB.

First edition of this rare and important work of political philosophy, an English inheritor to Grotius and the De cure ac belli et ac paci (first published in English the previous year, 1654), and a more immediate successor to Hobbes's Leviathan and De Cive (both published in English in 1651). The dedication to Oliver Cromwell ("Magno, Magne Britannie Principi &c. Protectori, Patri Patriae, & semper Augusto") is signed "Mich. Hawk", and he is given on the title page as "M.H. Master in Arts, and of the Middle Temple". Little is known of Hawke and it is not clear where he obtained his Master of Arts (apparently not Oxford or Cambridge) nor does his name appear in the Register of Admissions to the Middle Temple. He published two other works: The Grounds of the Lawes of England (1657), also dedicated to Cromwell, and Killing is Murder, and no Murder (1657), a justification of regicide. In his "massively learned, eclectic and avowedly Hobbesian" treatise (Armitage, p. 195), Hawke was arguing for legitimate despotism, citing "Hobbes in favour of very un-Hobbesian position, in support of Grotius that there is an obligatory law of nature in the state of nature and it should be kept. True natural liberty, argues Hawke, can only be found by living in accordance of the state" (Parkin, p. 144). "Hawke's providentialist imperialism may be one of the strangest progeny of Leviathan, but it was unique only in the Hobbesian means by which it appropriated familiar classical and religious languages. Once used in opposition to the Protector, these languages were now the guarantors of Cromwell's imperial identity" (Armitage, p. 196). The book is uncommon institutionally and rare in commerce - ESTC / Library Hub locates eight copies in the United Kingdom, held by the British Library, Bodleian (two copies, the second lacking leaves C4-5), National Library of Scotland, Manchester Central Library, Merton College (listed 3 times though all with the same shelfmark), Society of Antiquaries, with copies listed at the Congregational Library and Dr Williams Library (which share a building) the same copy; copies in North America are held by Yale, Columbia, Michigan, Huntington & Union Theological Seminary. Rare Book Hub and ABPC locate no copies in auction results. Provenance: Ink ownership inscriptions in a secretary hand of Thomas Sudell and William Sudell to both terminal free endpapers, both title pages, errata leaf and some drop-head titles, dated 1678-9 and 1682, one with a cost ("praetium 1s"): "William Sudell booke" (first title), "Tho: Sudell Booke 1682" (second title), "TSudell owes [sic] this Booke Anno Dni 1678/9" (errata), "Hic codex est meus testis est Deus / si quis me querit nomen hic erit TSudell Ano. Dni 1678/9" (p. 6), "Tho. Sudell 1678" (p. 117), "Thomas Sudell Booke Anno Dni 1679" and "TSudell Booke 1682" (first terminal endpaper), "Thomas Sudell Booke Anno Dom 1679 / Pretium 1s / Rich. Bilbey" (second terminal endpaper). William and Thomas Sudell were probably members of the merchant family of Preston, Lancashire (see Alumni Cantabrigienses): a Thomas Sudell was admitted pensioner at Trinity College, Cambridge on 2 May 1656 and a William Sudell, son of Nicholas, draper of Preston, was admitted pensioner (age 17) to St John's College, Cambridge on 17 March 1670-1; B.A. 1674/5, MA 1678; ordained deacon (Ely) 23 Sept. 1679. ESTC R202383. David Armitage, Greater Britain, 1516-1776: Essays in Atlantic History, 2004; Jon Parkin, Taming the Leviathan, 2010. Small octavo (146 x 95 mm). Contemporary sheep, spine ruled in blind, single fillet borders and initials "TS" (Thomas Suddell, see note) in blind, no pastedowns or front free endpapers with two terminal endpapers. Variant duplicate title-page with conjugate errata leaf bound after the dedication, not called for by ESTC and not present in the British Library copy reproduced on EEBO, terminal blank O4 excised leaving stub. Split at foot of rear joint but holding firm, browning from turn-ins, paper flaw at the head of leaf L8 (p. 147-8) with loss of the top two lines and slight loss to the third line of text, and a small hole M1 affecting one word on recto and two on verso. A very good copy.

Wrappers. Condition: Very good. First Edition, later impression. A RARE SURVIVING COPY OF THIS VARIANT, LATER, BUT EARLY, IMPRESSION RARE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, IN THE PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL WRAPPERS HOUSING THE FIRST EDITION STATE (perhaps, and we think likely, first printing) OF THE TEXT LEAVES of this Anthony Trollope novel first published in the United States on May 6, 1862 and not published in the UK until November, 1870, making this American Edition the TRUE FIRST EDITION OF THIS TROLLOPE NOVEL. The tale centers on a Partnership in a haberdashery amoung Brown (a retired Butter dealer), Jones (Brown's son-in-law), and Robinson (a strong advocate of advertising and an aspirant to the hand of Brown's youngest daughter, Maryanne). Due to Brown's timidity, Jones's embezzlement, and Robinson's extravagance, the Firm went bankrupt. This wrappered copy has been bound in brown half-cloth and marbled boards which (like the original wrappers) lack the spine. The front board's recto has a pasted-on title label whereon the novel's title is written and its verso bears a Muncie, Indiana Public Library label with the Library information written thereon. The volume contains its original front and rear wrappers and all of the required leaves. The front wrapper's recto shows "D 92" in pencil as well as a bit of loss to its left portion which losses are now adhered to the front board verso's adjacent margin. The front wrapper's verso shows evidence of a removed label of some sort with evidence of its location and size shown by a darkened area within which some remnants of the label remain. Within, the front free endpaper is torn and a portion of it remains with the front wrapper's verso as shown in the images provided with our proprietary listing. The pages remain in reasonably nice condition with some darkening throughout, varied foxing and scattered spotting, and only slight edge wear and tiny tears to the edge of a some of them. There is minor tearing and some additional margin tearing with loss to the outer margin of the leaf hosting pp 57/58. Copies of this FIRST EDITION text of any variant or issue are EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE and are, in consequence, ABSOLUTELY RARE TO THE MARKET. In his Bibliography of Trollope's works published in 1928 (which focused on Trollope's UK editions), Sadleir states with respect to this novel's first American edition: "It is impossible for a collector to ignore Harper's unauthorized edition of Brown, Jones and Robinson, so greatly did it predate the English version." While Sadleir gave some information on the US edition, he further stated: "The above description is necessarily incomplete and, in some places, problematical. I have myself never seen a copy of this pirated - but by eight years 'first book' - edition of Trollope's unhappy excursion into humour. America friends have contributed details of collation, but even they have failed to discover a copy in original shape. Wherefore the allocation of pages, the binding and illustration details have to be surmised." [Sadlier speculated in his attempt at a collation that the American edition probably had a frontispiece, but that speculation turned out to be wrong.] In his Bibliography's Addenda and Corrigenda, published in 1934, Sadlier stated: "A copy in fine untouched state has now been discovered which makes possible the following corrected collation: ." [which Sadlier then gives]. In his excellent Bibliography of Trollope's works published in the United States, Walter Smith notes that the 1862 copy he shows and describes is the ".actual first edition and the first of several works to appear in America before their publication in England. [He further notes, as did Sadlier, that the story was first published in serial form in the Cornhill Magazine from August 1861 - March, 1862 and was not published in novel form in England until 1870.] Smith goes on to state that: "One copy examined (Parrish Collection, Princeton, AT 355) had a title page dated 1875; its front cover was undated and listed the price at 50 cents; the.

First edition in the scarce original parts of Dickens tale of the fortunes of the Dombey shipping firm with "delight" for "joy" on page 284. Octavo, original wrappers, with 40 etchings by Halbot Knight Brown, containing all advertisements as issued. In very good condition. Housed in a custom full morocco and chemise pull-off case. Scarce and desirable. Dombey and Son "was well received by its readers, and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity⦠Dickens told his first biographer, 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor [Martin Chuzzlewit] has done with Selfishness" (Schlicke, 280). The work "has a sense of the numinous, is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things, than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception, so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end, so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it⦠Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" (Ackroyd, 526). The original serials contain the first of Browne's "dark plates" ("On the dark Road," in part 18), created by the engraver's lining machine and roulettes that tint the etched plate, creating heightened contrast (Johannsen, Phiz, 309).

Browne, Hablot K. (illustrator). [a handsome set] Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. [In 20-in-19 monthly serial parts.] London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846-1848. Original light blue-green pictorial wrappers. First Edition, as issued in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts beginning in October 1846 and ending in April 1848. The serialization of this novel began upon the end of serialization of OLIVER TWIST (the scarcest of all "Dickens in parts," occurring eight years after its publication in book form); until OLIVER TWIST these monthly parts of Dickens's works were issued by Chapman & Hall, but were now being issued by Bradbury & Evans. Part XVIII of DOMBEY AND SON includes the first so-called "dark plate" (appropriately, "On the dark Road") to appear in a Dickens work -- possible due to a new process; there would be another in DAVID COPPERFIELD, followed by ten in BLEAK HOUSE and eight in LITTLE DORRIT. At the end of serialization, DOMBEY AND SON was published in book form -- the preliminary leaves for which are supplied at the end of the final monthly part. As for issue points (there are three), this set like most is mixed: it reads "Capatin" on p. 324 (the uncommon 1st state), "if" is absent on p. 426 (1st state), and "431" is present on that page (2nd state) -- curious, in that pages 426 and 431 are in the same part. (The word "Delight" on page 284 is a faux issue point, since all copies in parts have that error.) This is a very good-plus set -- fine in appearance, because all the wrappers (front and rear) are unusually clean; six of the front wrappers bear the small ink-stamp of "Webster & Co., 60 Piccadilly". Two of the rear wrappers (I and XVI) are "borrowed" from a different part, and all the delicate (plain) spines are expertly renewed. Notably, this set has ALL the advertisements and slips that are specified in the Hatton & Cleaver bibliography for a complete set. All the plates have varying degrees of darkening or foxing in the margins, but only Part II has plates that are significantly foxed. In all, an absolutely complete, clean set, with allowances for the "renewals." Hatton & Cleaver pp 225-250. Housed in a handsome clamshell case with morocco spine.

Advising for a right Choice in Marriage, and how to keep from those sad Consequences have fallen out in too many Families, sometimes upon small dislike between Husband and Wife for sale by Bernard Quaritch Ltd ABA ILAB

First Edition. 12mo, pp.[22], 189, [3], with a terminal blank but wanting the initial blank A1; a very good copy in early nineteenth-century polished calf, worn; authorial presentation inscription to title verso (cropped at foot).First edition, very rare, of a charming work of marriage guidance, inscribed by the author 'To my welbeloved sonn Mr Obadiah Bourne daily prayinge to Gode for a blessing uppon him and upon the people under his charge with mine and Deare mothers Blessinge I give this little book for a Remembrancer '.The writer and controversialist Immanuel Bourne (15901672) had published his first work, a sermon, in 1617. It was as chaplain to Sir Samuel Tryon that he met his wife, Jemima Beckingham, and that he received the living of Ashover in Derbyshire in 1621, which he later passed on to his son Obadiah (1634?1710). Bourne's last work, A Golden Chain of Directions was addressed to the children of his later patron the Earl of Rutland, most pointedly to John Manners, the 1st Duke (16381711), who had been granted a legal separation from his first wife, Anne Pierrepont, on the grounds of her adultery, and then obtained private acts bastardising his children and getting permission to remarry in 1667. Among the twenty links in Bourne's 'chain of love' for a successful marriage are: agreement in religion, proximity in age (or at least not extreme difference), mutual affection, parental consent, 'free Communication of mutual kindness, and conjugal engagements to and with one another', love of soul as well as body, fidelity, respect, increase of estate, mutual care for the children, cohabitation, compromise, and the spiritual wisdom to be able discuss faults with equanimity. Though he is conventional on a wife's subordination to her husband, there is as much here on a husband's responsibilities to his partner: 'a husband must not be like unto a Crab, Orange, or Lemon; fair on the outside to the shew, and soure and bitter within; pleasing, with sugared words abroad, Sweet-heart before Company, and of a froward and perverse Disposition at home'.Wing B3853 (Bodley and CUL only). Couverture rigide. - Bradbury and Evans, London 1848, In-8 (14x22cm), 624pp., relié. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND] 624pp.

First edition, with the earliest state of the hook on the left hand on the vignette title-page. With engraved Illustrations by H.K. Browne throughout. 8vo, in a handsome contemporary binding of three quarter tan calf over marbled boards, the spine with gilt bands, one compartment with brown morocco label lettered in gilt. xiv, 624 pp. A very handsome copy in a proper period binding, sturdy and attractive and unusually clean and bright throughout. FIRST EDITION. This is quite a desirable copy of the Dickens novel that introduced the world to the memorable Mr. Dombey and his transactions, business and personal, and that creates a "clear picture of society in [Dickens'] time." Dickens wrote it while in residence in a number of different areas, beginning the work in Lausanne, Switzerland, continuing in Paris, and finishing in Brighton, Broadstairs, and London, making the text "a true cosmopolite in the manner of its writing." The publication of this book marked a turning point for Dickens; his proceeds were a fine increase over MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT, and with these earnings "his financial worriment ceased, prosperity began, and a period of money-saving was at hand." This is the first publication of the text in its entirety after its serialization from October 1846 to April 1848. Copies this early are becoming scarce. An excellent piece of classic Dickensiana.

  • Oblong 4to. 12 x 8.5 in. 1 printed leaf on thick green-tinted paper. With 18 original linen-backed silver gelatin photographs, sized 8 x 10 in., all numbered w/in negative at lower fore-edge keyed to the printed title leaf. Flexible mottled simulated black calf string post-binder, hidden flaps punch-sewn at gutter margin w/ brown braid, green lettering stamped on front cover, (minor rubbing, shelfwear), still NF copy. First edition of this exceedingly rare salesman sample photo album for post-World War II G.I. Bill homes, featuring a time lapse photo series, and image of the prefabricated small home invented, designed, & marketed Willisway Systems in Chicago, IL. Prefabricated homes became a necessity in post-World War II America, to provide a faster and more cost effective way to build housing for the rapidly expanding households of Mid-Century America, and Home-Ola was developed by two brothers who owned and operated C.W. Plywood in Chicago, IL. These were of light construction, aimed at the $ 3000 market, and attractive to newly created G.I. families who could purchase with not money down. The time lapse photo series begins at 9:00 AM with the prepared foundation, and steel framework which had begun to be constructed at 8:00 AM. These are followed by photos subsequent photos at increments, with the insulated floor panels laid by 9:20; three-quarters of the walls laid by 10:10, stairway installed by 11:20; truss installation began at 1:10, and by 3:10, roofing, and windows were in place. The final three photos show the finished Home-Ola models which were about 700 square feet, featuring a 12 x 20 foot living room, kitchen, dinette & bathroom on opposite wall, steel stairway, and stressed-skin Douglas Fir plywood panels, resin-glued and pre-cut in the Tacoma factory. There are few records of how many Home-Ola homes were erected, and sold, but unfortunately within less than a decade both brothers, Jacques (1889-1948), and Robert Jacques (1916-1955) had passed away, and the CW Plywood Co. sold to outside investors who continued to produce Home-Ola homes until after 1960. Steel production facilities had been vastly expanded in the North American market during World War II, and as the War drew to a close, manufacturers, and steel mills raced to find solutions to keep production rolling, and workers employed, including producing steel frames for housing, steel kitchen cabinets, and more. Home-Ola was amongst an entire class of prefabricated Wood Frame Houses popular in the first couple decades after World War II because of reasonable cost, as well as speed of construction. No copies in Worldcat; See: Looking at Outstanding Prefabs, Popular Science, August, 1956, pp. 71-73; Catalogue of House Building Construction Systems (1960) -- for both U.S. and Canadian Markets.
