Burgundy spine with gilt decorations and lettering. (chip to lower spine about size of half dollar) 352 pp. Frontis engraving from 1888, showing two guys in England street fist fighting. Front hinge cracked else good. Written about 1840. Illustrated.

Hinges are moderately cracked with exposed netting. Clean pages with noticeable tanning and foxing throughout. More pronounced to half title page and last page textblock. Pencil markings to front free endpaper. Binding is slightly loose. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Minor splits to spine ends and corners causing cloth to be frayed. Visible wear marks to boards.

Presentation inscription on front paste down is 1919, but there is no date on title page, which is detached from the rest of the text block. The copyright page is missing. The sewn binding is rim , but front board, much abraded at crown is almost detached. Despite being faderd and scuffed, the front baord has beautiful floral design with embossed lettering.

Tightly bound with visible thumb-marking throughout. Pencil inscription to front endpaper. Boards have mild edgewear with corner crushing and notable marking to boards. Heavy tanning to board edges and spine, which has mild crushing and tearing to ends. Book has forward lean. Visible stains to boards.

Condition: Very Good. reprint. Red cloth gilt, F. x+435+viii+435pp, b/w frontis, 35 b/w plates, fore edges a little foxed, otherwise a fine copy in bright cloth. A facsimile of the 'Author's Favourite Edition' originally published by Chapman & Hall. On the verso of the half title it states : This is an exact facsimilie in every detail of text and illustration, excepting on the title pages, of the last edition of his works published under the eye of Charles Dickens, and described by him as 'this is the best edition of my books.' The Style of Binding being also copied from the original. At the time of publication one of Dickens' most popular novels, telling of the trials of Nell Trent & her grandfather, who's lives are almost ruined by the moneylender Quilp. The last part of the book is a collection of 31 essays & short stories. 975 grams.

This volume contains 671 unmarked and uncreased historical pages nicely enhanced by historic black and white illustrations. Beautifully done. "In April, 1840, I issued the first number of a new weekly publication, price threepence, called Master Humphrey's Clock. A heavily shelfworn edition in Very Good- condition with the protective page on the title page slightly torn ; Dickens' second volume of collected works features reprinted pieces from the author's earlier works, including "The Ghost of Paul Poncelet" and "The Chimes."; 8vo; 386 pages.

Condition: Acceptable. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A readable copy. All pages and the cover are intact (dust cover may be missing). Pages can include considerable notes--in pen or highlighter--but notes cannot obscure the text. This is a single volume in the original olive green trade cloth, being a numbered copy 130 of a run of 1000 copies. Large format book (4to) with rough cut page edges, as this edition was sold under the assumption most customers would favour rebinding the set decoratively. Original binding is now toned and lightly worn with the lettering piece at the spine now lost. Contents bear occasional foxing but are otherwise clean and clear. Binding is cracked but contents still remain affixed.A nice illustrated edition.
