First Edition
Contemporary 1/2 leather with marbled boards, rubbed and worn. 448 pp. Likely first edition, first printing, rebound at the time. Foxing, generally light but heavier in some places. Text block split between pages 146 and 147. The verso of the title page has the copyright notice, but not have the printer's imprint. It appears that this is the third variant of the first edition as described by Wagner-Camp 170:1a (variant 3) as it contains neither the frontispiece nor ads at the rear which were included in other issues. It is not possible to determine this conclusively, however, as one of the defining characteristics of this state is its dark cloth binding which has been replaced in this copy. Howes P97 describes a "freak" variant of six special copies sent by the publisher to Parkman which contained no frontispiece, engraved title or ads, but there are no markings or provenance in this copy to show that this might have been one of those six copies. Field 1177: "Mr. Parkman had all the genuine love of adventure of a frontiersman, the taste for the picturesque and romantic of an artist, and the skill in narration of an accomplished raconteur. It is not too high praise to say that his pictures of savage life are not excelled." Parkman's narrative is one of the monuments of Americana which Bernard DeVoto called "one of the exuberant masterpieces of American literature." Wagner-Camp 170:1a. BAL 15446. Cowan, p.474.
