The Road Back - Erich Maria Remarque, First US Edition, Little, Brown, and Company Boston 1931 Gray cloth stamped in red and black, red topstain pp. [iv], 344, [4]; VG book with gift inscription penned to ffep, in a Good original jacket with a large chip to the head of spine, other chips, tears, and creases, light soil and rubbing The second part of Remarque's loose trilogy on the war beginning with All Quiet on the Western Front. The title refers to more than the physical road home. The book discusses the impossibilities of adjusting back to civilian life, relays horrific episodes of PTSD, and further critiques those responsible for the war and the lack of support veterans received. The book laments the death of comradeship forged by the war and the return of the reign of petty self interest. The book also warns against the rising tide of Naziism in Germany. It's difficult to believe another war followed so quickly on the heels of these novels but that fact was aided no doubt by the burning and banning of these books by the Nazis in 1933.

First Edition Signed
First American edition of the sequel to Remarque's masterpiece All Quiet on the Western Front. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Wenck. We have never seen another signed example of this title. Set a few weeks after the end of All Quiet on the Western Front, The Road Back details the experience of young men in Germany who have returned from the trenches of World War I and are attempting to integrate back into civilian life. Its most salient feature is the main characters' pessimism about contemporary society which, they feel, caused the war and does not wish to reform itself. It was first serialized in the German newspaper Vossische Zeitung between December 1930 and January 1931, and published in book form in April 1931.
