Covers are clean and intact overall but there is discoloration and light soiling throughout and spine is chipped. Binding somewhat loose but still holding. A Very Good copy. Charming song book containing choral sheet music. As noted by the title, this book is intended for singing classes, choirs, and other singing groups or events. This book is a great primer for early vocal training or singing practice and is principally composed of many short songs or vocal exercises on sheet music. Some of the songs have lyrics. In the front is brief text that instructs readers on the basics of reading sheet music, music terminology, and introductory music education (some of the subjects include dynamics, the structure and notations of sheet music, keys, majors, and minors). Root & Cady was a music publishing firm founded in 1858 by Ebenezer Towner Root (1822-1896) and Chauncey Marvin Cady (1824-1889). It was one of the foremost American publishers during the time of the American Civil War and in the city of Chicago. However, about $125,000 worth of Root & Cady's inventory was sadly destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the company closed within one year due to bankruptcy. It is likely that most of the copies of this particular title, The Song King, were also destroyed in the conflagration.
