Octavo, xii, [2], 562pp. Red cloth, title in silver on spine and front cover. Scribner's "A" printed on copyright page. Light wear at lower tip of front board, no impact to text or endpapers. Lacking the publisher's acetate dust jacket. From a limited edition of 1000 copies signed by the author, this being number 90. Lindbergh's first account of his transatlantic journey, titled "We," was published shortly after the historic flight in 1927. His account of the journey, The Spirit of St. Louis, was published in 1953 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography in 1954. Charles' wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was a ghostwriter on the book, and its success is widely attributed to her writing skills.

Later printing, but same format and look as the first printing. Inscribed by Lindbergh "To. with best wishes from Charles A. Lindbergh" on title page below his printed name. Book is clean and unmarked with a couple of slight soiling marks on page edges. These are light and barely noticeable. Dustjacket is clean and not faded. First edition in Swedish, signed limited issue, number 7 of an unstated edition signed by the author, with the limitation page printed ad personam for the Swedish state secretary Olle Karleby. The Spirit of St. Louis is Lindbergh's most famous book, containing the account of his record-breaking solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic. For this feat, Lindbergh won the Medal of Honor and was Time's first Man of the Year. This book, published over two decades after the flight, added a Pulitzer Prize to his accolades and was well received: "this is a frank and fascinating autobiography that destroys the myth of the phlegmatic, nerveless airman impervious to doubt and to the uncertainties that plague lesser mortals. Lindbergh writes as well as he flies" (Reynolds). The Spirit of St. Louis was originally published in the UK and New York the previous year. Karleby (1918-1994) served in the Swedish defence ministry, later becoming the deputy managing director of Skandinaviske Banken and the managing director of Hansa insurance. Quentin Reynolds, "The Bold Victory of a Man Alone", New York Times, 20 May 1927. Octavo. Publisher's light blue morocco by Nylen and Co., spine with raised bands, gilt-lettered direct, front cover with gilt vignette of airplane and gilt signature of Lindbergh, gilt inner dentelles and edges. Half-tone portrait frontispiece of Lindbergh, 3 similar plates illustrated recto and verso, maps and diagrams in the text at end. Top of covers lightly sunned, slight marks to fore-edge, minor marginal toning. A near-fine copy.

After receiving a Ph.D. from the university, he served on its faculty in the astronomy department. In 1943 he became associate dean of the University of Chicagoâs Division of Physical Sciences. During the Manhattan Project, Bartky served as the Metallurgical Laboratoryâs associate director. Bartky was a signatory of the Szilard Petition. First Edition. A presentation copy of Lindbergh's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, inscribed the month before publication, "To Carl Allen, in appreciation of years of friendship, and in thanks for criticism of the manuscript of 'The Spirit of St. Louis'. Charles A. Lindbergh, Aug. 1953. Publication date is Sept. 14th." The recipient is mentioned in the book's acknowledgments. A very good copy in dust jacket; in a custom clamshell box. Included with the book is a two page typed letter, dated January 18, 1953, and signed "Charles", about six hundred words in length. Lindbergh thanks Allen for reading the manuscript, "I feel sure that some errors will be found, but want to exhaust every reasonable method of eliminating them before publication. In regard to the take-off area at North Island (San Diego), I have no figures. There was plenty of margin in this instance as the plane was carrying only a little over a half load of fuel.I wrote the first draft of the manuscript in past tense, then changed to present. Personally, I think it made a great improvement in spite of certain obvious restrictions. In regard to the difference between 'We' and 'The Spirit of St. Louis', as you probably know I wrote 'We' in three weeks (with the exception of about 5000 words which I had pieced together previously); also, one learns, or at least should learn during a quarter century of life. I have worked with more or less regularity for fourteen years on this present manuscript - quite intensively this winter. Also, as I am sure you realize more than most, being married to Anne has affected this book, in a deeper sense, as much as though she had written large parts of it.In regard to the press, I am afraid that the desire for chronological fact and literary balance has affected my pages more than mellowness - much as I believe in mellowing with time. The press events which created a taste of bitterness which still remains took place after my flight in 1927.In regard to the incident of engine trouble over the Rockies.I don't think I ever claimed to tell everything that happened on my flights, any more than I tell all that happens in my life.Of course, there are occasions when I have said 'fine' to a pleasant 'how are you', when a literal reply might be 'I feel like hell' - and that applies to a flight as well as to a personal condition." With the original typed envelope. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
