Add to basketFull Leather. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket As Issued. First Edition, Thus. THE AMERICAN DREAM FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS. Winner of the 1970 National Book Award for Fiction, Them is Joyce Carol Oates's powerful portrait of working-class America, tracing the fortunes of the Wendall family through poverty, violence, and social upheaval. Set principally in Detroit, the novel follows three generations struggling against economic hardship, fractured family relationships, and the turbulent forces reshaping American cities. Through their experiences, Oates examines class divisions, racial tensions, and the elusive promise of upward mobility. Originally published in 1969, Them is among Oates's most acclaimed novels and a central work in her exploration of American society. The novel forms the concluding volume of her informal Wonderland Quartet, a series examining the psychological and social experiences of Americans confronting poverty, ambition, violence, and changing national circumstances. DETROIT, CLASS CONFLICT & SOCIAL UPHEAVAL. Drawing upon the realities of working-class urban life, Oates depicts the pressures of economic inequality, racial conflict, and family instability in mid-twentieth-century Detroit. The novel's portrayal of social unrest gives it particular significance as a literary response to the transformations of postwar America. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. It is painful to have to describe this copy because of the issues it posesses affecting its value and the description given and sold by a reputable book dealer - invoice and description laid in. The book does have glue residue on the rear first free endpaper. Tape residue on the outside front and rear covers. Slightly frayed bottom of spine and two slightly bumped corners. A couple of small spots on the foredge of the textblock and also a few more on the interior of the book. Perhaps the biggest descrepancy is the dustjacket - it obviously has been "married" to this copy of the book, which is not mentioned in the dealer's description. It does have a couple of closed tears at the top of the spine - see image. ; Signed, inscribed and dated by the author on the first front free endpaper. 1st issue DJ with $6.95 present and Barbara Bannon blurb on front flap, as well as Robert Benyas photo credit on rear panel. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 508 pages; Signed by Author.
