Waking up at the bottom of a deep pit, she sees an emergency rescue team above her. The people looking down see something far stranger.''We always look forward. We never look back.''That girl grows up to be Dr. Rose Franklyn, a brilliant scientist and the leading world expert on what she discovered. An enormous, ornate hand made of an exceptionally rare metal, which predates all human civilisation on the continent. ''But this thing . it's different. It challenges us. It rewrites history.''An object whose origins and purpose are perhaps the greatest mystery humanity has ever faced. Solving the secret of where it came from - and how many more parts may be out there - could change life as we know it.''It dares us to question what we know about ourselves.''But what if we were meant to find it? And what happens when this vast, global puzzle is complete.?''About everything.''; Goed - z??r goed: pocket met fris en schoon binnenwerk, recht boekblok, gaaf omslag.

A hint of minor wear to very tips of corners. Covers show some very limited edgewear, tiny creases to spine ends, faint shelfworn marks. -- The aim of this study is to analyse the history of [Themis] and [Dike] in the early Greek literature, i.e. Homer and Hesiod. The subject has been discussed for a very long time and our survey is supposed to continue the debate. The interpretation of a term is always difficult and it is especially so when the sources are of strictly literary character. Works of literature are not supposed to define abstract notions, neither are they expected to describe in detail the ways in which the terms were used by the contemporary people. The study is based on the analysis of almost all passages where the terms [Themis], [Dike] and their derivatives appear. The aim of this procedure is to demonstrate the development of the abstract ideas of justice and order which, in the following centuries, will stand in the centre of Greek ethical thought. These terms are of particular interest because of their significance for the concept of a state and a society. [Themis], as well as [Dike], denoted norms, then laws and, eventually, the principle of justice, which ruled the human community and made social life possible.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Gilbert Murray, F. M. Cornford (illustrator). 1st Iranian / Farsi edition. With an Excursus on the Ritual Forms Preserved in Greek Tragedy By Gilbert Murray and a Chapter on the Origin of the Olympic Games By F. M. Cornford. Drawing upon a range of disciplines including anthropology, classical studies, archaeology and psychology, Jane Ellen Harrison's Themis pieced together the origins of early Greek religion. One of 'Britain's first female professional 'career academics'.and the ideas espoused on Greek rituals and myths in Themis remain influential today. This revolutionary study traces Themis back through history, as a matriarchal tribal goddess. Addressing areas including magic, sacrifice and the origin of the Olympic games, Harrison applies archaeological discoveries to the interpretation of Greek religion. Including a detailed preface and explanatory notes, this revised second edition of 1927 is described by Harrison as 'addressed not so much to the specialist as to the thinker generally'. xxv.559p. Illus. index, Text block tight and complete, some edge stains. in somewhat shelfworn shabby covers.

What channel? Any channel. An unknown vessel, not of this world, materializes in London. A colossal figure towering over the city, it makes no move. Is this a peaceful first contact or the prelude to an invasion? Every child has nightmares. But the only thing scarier than little Eva Reye's dreams - apocalyptic visions of death and destruction - is the habit they have of coming true. Scientist Dr Rose Franklin has no memory of the lst few years. The strangers she works with say she died, and was brought back to life. The question is not just how. But why? Kara Resnik and Vincent Couture fell in love during war, and have found peace since. They are the thin-line of defence against what is coming. But they do not know they have been living a lie. And a man who claims to have the answers has his own agenda. There are things he cannot say - and others he won't. All are pieces of an epic puzzle: one we have been trying to solve since the dawn of time:- (original cost £12.99).

The discovery set in motion a cataclysmic chain of events with geopolitical ramifications. Rose and the Earth Defense Corps raced to master the enigmatic technology, as giant robots suddenly descended on Earth's most populous cities, killing one hundred million people in the process. Though Rose and her team were able to fend off the attack, their victory was short lived. The mysterious invaders retreated, disappearing from the shattered planet but they took the scientist and her crew with them. Now, after nearly ten years on another world, Rose returns to find a devastating new war, this time between humans. It appears the aliens left behind their titanic death machines so humankind will obliterate itself. Rose is determined to find a solution, whatever it takes. But will she become a pawn in a doomsday game no one can win? Quite scarce signed. Signed by Author(s).
