Paperback. Condition: Good. Youth-led organizing, a burgeoning movement that empowers young people while simultaneously enabling them to make substantive contributions to their communities, is increasingly receiving attention from scholars, activists, and the media. Melvin Delgado and Lee Staples, recognized leaders in social work macro practice and community organization, have produced the first comprehensive study of this dynamic field. Their well-organized book takes an important step toward bridging the gap between academic knowledge and community practice in this growing area. The authors social justice-rooted perspective on the fields conceptual and practical foundations is an effective basis for analyzing youth-led community organizing, but they also offer glimpses of successful groups in action and helpful insight into how fledgling organizations can become stronger. These groups and their young participants represent the politics and activism of the future, and Delgado and Staples have produced a lucid, thoughtful guide to their key aspects and recent developments that students and researchers of community organization, not to mention the organizers and their facilitators themselves, are sure to find both inspiring and useful. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. This anthology provides a unique collection of articles on classic grounded theory, as developed by sociologist Dr. Barney G. Glaser. Organized in four sections, teaching grounded theory, techniques, history and philosophy, and advanced approaches, the 19 chapters fill gaps and correct misunderstandings about the method. Chapters on the merits of classic grounded theory over other versions, the historical and philosophical influences on the method, and advice for Ph.D. students doing classic grounded theory dissertations will be useful to novice and experienced researchers. How-to chapters on the use of focus groups, online interviews, and video for data collection expand data possibilities, while articles on formal theory, software, and testing concepts with structural equation modeling will challenge the more experienced. Essays on Glaser as a teacher, as well as a biographical interview in which he discusses his life philosophy and, for the first time, the influence of psychoanalysis on grounded theory, round out the picture of Glaser as mentor and man. The book's contributors, from nine countries and as many disciplines, all studied grounded theory with Glaser.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Studying the increasingly powerful role television plays in the political process, Fredric T. Smoller offers a persuasive argument that the big three network coverage of the presidency is gradually eroding public support for and confidence in that office. This book argues that network coverage of the presidency is determined by the political, technical, and commercial nature of the medium itself, producing a bias toward extensive and negative coverage. Smoller studies the thematic nature of television's presidential coverage, demonstrating how producers and correspondents integrate their daily coverage into ongoing themes which provide dramatic unity over a prolonged period of time. Thus, television's portrayal of the White House generally starts out favorable but soon becomes unfavorable. Attempts by the White House to combat these negative portrayals by managing news coverage and isolating the president will subvert democratic values. The Six O'Clock Presidency argues against generally accepted views that network coverage of the presidency is too favorable and reveals the power of the networks to unravel the career of individual presidents and the public's support for that office. Noting that television news is getting tougher on the presidency as each full-term administration president since Richard Nixon has received a bigger measure of poor coverage than its predecessor, the author spent several weeks with the White House press corps to determine how this could be explained. He interviewed television news executives, correspondents and technicians for ABC, CBS, and NBC, as well as White House officials. The result is a comprehensive study of the economics, technology, and personnel of network news and its coverage of the presidency.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Organizational Diagnosis suggest ways of looking at an organization to determine "gaps" between "what is" and "what ought to be."In workbook format, the author presents a vocabulary and concepts which quickly help the reader understand many things about an organization and decide what changes need to be made. To help in the diagnosis, a "six-box model" using the categories if structure, purposes, relationships, rewards, helpful mechanisms, and leadership is provided in Part I. On left-hand pages are presented the vocabulary and concepts of this diagnostic process, the various factors affecting an organization's performance, and the key elements leading to improvement. The right-hand pages in Part I furnish brief pencil-and-paper exercises for trying out these theories and evaluating any organization the reader is familiar with. Part II consists of annotated readings from leading theory sources, offering opportunities for a more comprehensive study of the diagnostic concepts introduced in Part I of the book. Thus readers can proceed from brief theory, to personal experience, to in-depth study--as they wish. The six-box framework provides a way of organizing experience that makes sense to managers.Weisbord's concepts have been applied successfully to work teams, industrial firms, government agencies, universities, medical centers, and small businesses. They can be used as a "cognitive" framework for team development, management training, supervisory training courses, organizational behavior education, or diagnostic self-study.The two parts, theory and practice in the first section plus resource readings in the second, make this an ideal book around which to design introductory courses in organizational behavior, as part of undergraduate or graduate management training. The book may also be used in continuing education courses, whether oriented toward industry, the public sector, or health care.…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Hummingbirds and angels don't need two good feet. They have wings. That's what Alba's mother always says. Of course, Alba doesn't have wings or two good feet: she has Cleo. Cleo is the name Alba has given to her left foot, which was born twisted in the wrong direction. When she points this out, though, her mother just smiles like the world has some surprise in store she doesn't know about yet. Well, Alba has her own surprise planned. After one final surgery and one final cast, Cleo is almost ready to meet the world straight on--just in time to run in the sixth grade cross-country race. Unfortunately, Alba's best friend Levi thinks there's no way she can pull it off. And she thinks there's no way he's right about the school librarian hiding a wormhole in her office. Tempers flare. Sharp words fly faster than hummingbirds. And soon it looks like both friends will be stuck proving their theories on their own.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Atomic Theory 7, a collaboration in the truest sense between the fiercely-imagined poems of Shann Ray and the sacramental art of Trinh Mai, considers a most uncommon union between the lover and the beloved: the body at rest and war, in beauty and peace, in violence and despair, in the finality of darkness and the atomic fusion that beckons new life. The unity between dark and light in Atomic Theory 7 is open, composed of untold force, robustly unknowable, and intimately attuned. Even the most forbidding trauma is not in vain. From the ashes of holocaust, love becomes an essential human gift found not only in casting one's eyes upward, but in visceral, physical gestures: a healing hand on the chest of friends and strangers, a loving embrace between enemies. The breath of the holy over the wristbones of a child. A touch of the numinous at the zenith of the shoulder blades. God in all things. Breath. Whisper. Song. Here it is not the Divine who commits genocide but people, and in the heartrending aftermath, we are given the grace to meet one another again, kiss each other in peace, and go forth fused with atomic responsibility. Mai, Trinh (illustrator).…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In developing the most comprehensive theory of social interaction among humans to date, the author has also constructed a general theory of micro dynamics for sociology and social psychology. He does so by reviewing existing theories of the past and present, synthesixing these concepts into abstract models and principles of social interaction. In contrast to Talcott Parsons and many others, the book argues that social interaction, rather than action and behaviour, is sociology's most basic unit of analysis. This unit is conceptualized as involving three processes: (1) motivational, or the process of mobilizating and energizing interactive behaviour, (2) interactional, or the process of mutual signaling and interpreting with symbols, and (3) structuring, or the process of repeating and organizing social interactions in time and place. For each of these three constituent processes, the relevant theories are analyzed and then synthesized into composite models and general laws. Finally, the author combines these composite models to produce a general, albeit tentative theory of micro dynamics in sociology, a theory that the author hopes will encourage empirical tests by researchers and possible modifications by theorists.…
