Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is an excellent Association Copy, with a Signed inscription from one research chemist to another. The inscription is on the title page. It reads simply 'Paul Haake with best regards, Thor.' I believe this was Professor Bak's first book. Once listed, it will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. As you can see from the photos, the covers are clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is still fairly bright. There isn't too much wear. There are bump/creases at both the front and rear top corners (happily, neither cover crease created what one would credit as a crease on any of the pages). That's really about it for wear, maybe a little crinkle at the top edge of the spine. The edges and corners are in solid condition. There's no rubbing or rub-through anywhere. The page edges are clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There are no binding issues. The pages are very clean. I found only two very tiny spots, one on each of two facing pages, away from the print. There are no markings anywhere in the book. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. 'Thor Anders Bak was Danish chemist. He was professor of chemistry at the University of Copenhagen from 1963 to 1992, rector of the University of Copenhagen from 1972 to 1976 and chairman of the Danish Refugee Council from 1984 to 1989. He was a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Engineering Sciences. In 1989 he received the HC Ĝrsted Medal in gold. In 1999 he became Commander of Dannebrog. His other books included Chemistry (1960), Mathematics for Scientists (1966), and A Dream of Science (1992). 'Paul Haake was a noted research chemist and educator. He received a graduate degree in chemistry from Harvard University. His doctoral research on hydrolysis and isotopic exchange involving esters of phosphoric acid was in the laboratory of Frank Westheimer. After postdoctoral work at the California Institute of Technology, he started his faculty career at UCLA. In 1968 he came to Wesleyan University where he was a beloved teacher, colleague and researcher for almost 40 years. With Max Tishler, he enthusiatically developed the doctorate program in chemistry at Wesleyan. His research on the kinetics and mechanism of chemical reactions, particularly reactions of biochemically-interesting phosphorus compounds, resulted in 100 scholarly articles and books, including Hydrolysis and Exchange in Esters of Phosphoric Acid", which has been cited 250 times since it was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. This was and is a seminal paper in phosphorus chemistry. In 1986, he was a founding member and major force behind the formation of Wesleyan's Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, which at the time was considered both controversial and forward looking. Professor Haake devoted much of his career to teaching and was very proud of the extremely popular series of courses he taught at Wesleyan for non-science majors including, "Molecular Basis of Social Problems," and "Biochemical Basis of Nutrition. In 1975 he was appointed by Governor Ella T. Grasso to Connecticut's Nuclear Power Evaluation Council. The Council raised questions about the ability of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to ensure the safety of nuclear power.'. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Inscribed by Ilya Prigogine to Ali Bulent Cambel on front end page. Volume 1. Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Library stamps and markings. Shelf wear. viii, 319 pages, illustrations, 24 cm. "Ilya Prigogine was a Russian-born Belgian physical chemist who received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1977 for contributions to nonequilibrium thermodynamics. Prigogine's work dealt with the application of the second law of thermodynamics to complex systems, including living organisms. The second law states that physical systems tend to slide spontaneously and irreversibly toward a state of disorder (a process driven by an increase in entropy); it does not, however, explain how complex systems could have arisen spontaneously from less-ordered states and have maintained themselves in defiance of the tendency toward maximum entropy. Prigogine argued that as long as systems receive energy and matter from an external source, nonlinear systems (or dissipative structures, as he called them) can go through periods of instability and then self-organization, resulting in more-complex systems whose characteristics cannot be predicted except as statistical probabilities. Prigogine's work was influential in a wide variety of fields, from physical chemistry to biology, and was fundamental to the new disciplines of chaos theory and complexity theory." "Ali Bulent Cambel taught mechanical engineering and gas dynamics at Northwestern University where he became the Walter P. Murphy Distinguished Professor. He advised the US government on energy projects and served as Vice President for Research for the Institute for Defense Analysis. Working for the government represented his way to give back to his adopted country.". Signed.

pp. 91-114. Original wrappers. Near Fine. First Edition. SIGNED BY WILLIAM F. GIAUQUE (on front wrapper). Offprint of William F. Giauque's Nobel Lecture, December 12, 1949. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1949 was awarded to William Francis Giauque "for his contributions in the field of chemical thermodynamics, particularly concerning the behaviour of substances at extremely low temperatures." "Thermodynamics is about heat and its transformation into other forms of energy--basically involving statistical descriptions of atomic and molecular movements. An important but difficult to grasp concept in thermodynamics is entropy, which is a measure of disorder in a system. The third law of thermodynamics states that the entropy in a perfect crystal is zero when the absolute temperature is zero. In 1933 William Giauque used a magnetic field to attain an extremely low temperature and was able provide evidence for the law's validity" (Nobel Prize website).
