Drewry Cade Alford was born in Anderson County, South Carolina in 1856. His father was a merchant and farmer who later moved to Hart County, Georgia and was postmaster at Oak Bower for many years, all are descended from James Alford who migrated from Boston to North Carolina about 1730. D.C Alford became a successful businessman and served as a delegate to the Democratic National Committee, and was director of the Hartwell Bank.
