All the monkeys in Monkey Village are in a tizzy. Something has happened that has never happed before. Mother Monkey has not just one baby monkey, not just two, but THREE baby monkeys. Third Monkey is treated well by the older monkeys, but not at all well by the young ones. They tease him. They say 'You are little and ugly and the third one.'' One day Third Monkey has enough of this and decides he will no longer do monkey things. He will leave and be different. But the more he tries to be different, the more he ends up acting just like a monkey. While Third Monkey is away learning about himself, the Monkey Village realizes they miss him and remember his good traits. When Old Leader tells the village that he is growing old and they must choose a new leader, they realize that Third Monkey's good qualities combined with his newfound wisdom make him the best choice. Clark, both a Newberry Honor finalist and later a medalist, was perhaps most notable for her Bureau of Indian Affairs' series of children's books, among them the Little Herder titles, which advanced the cause of the Tesuque Pueblo and in turn helped their children learn to read. Per Viking Press' practice of designating first editions, the statement "First published by The Viking Press in September 1956" on the terminal endpaper recto. Original art work by celebrated children's books illustrator Don Freeman. Freeman's illustrations appear on both the front and terminal endpapers and every page in the text, each in vivid color. Includes scarce dust jacket in archival Brodart sleeve with $2.50 price on front flap. 44 numbered pages. 10 1/4" x 6 3/4".
