Over the past twenty-five years, he has investigated various photographic genres, including portraiture, the nude, and landscape and architectural photography, using both analog and digital technologies, and culling imagery from scientific archives, print media, and the internet.Presented here is a selection of Ruff's most well-known works, as well as the newer Tripe series, begun in 2018, which draws on negatives of India and Burma taken in the 1850s by an officer in the East India Company army. Also included is a conversation between Ruff and Okwui Enwezor, which took place at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, in connection with Ruff's retrospective then on view. The conversation, published here for the first time, has been edited for this volume and examines Ruff's artistic practice and inspiration, serving as an engaging and dynamic introduction to the artist.Published on the occasion of the artist's solo exhibition at David Zwirner, Hong Kong, in 2019, Thomas Ruff is available in both English only and bilingual English/traditional Chinese editions.

Thomas Ruff is one of the most important contemporary German photographers living today. Studying under Bernd and Hilla Becher, Ruff…experimented with large-format printing. This comprehensive book focuses on his photographic series from the past twenty years. These series are based on found photographs from a variety of sources. The source materials range from early nineteenth century photography to machinemade photographs of distant planets, from post-war press photos to propaganda images from the People's Republic of China, and from Internet pornography to computer generated photograms. In each series, Ruff explores the historical and technical conditions of photography by examining these highly varied pictorial worlds. At the same time, he takes into consideration the afterlife of the images in archives, databases, and on the Internet, thus formulating highly complex perspectives on the photographic medium and the world that has already been photographed.

Schon seit 1989 hat Thomas Ruff die eigene Produktion von Fotografien zugunsten der Arbeit mit vorhandenem Material zurückgestellt. Die Beschäftigung mit strukturellen und inhaltlichen Fragestellungen des Mediums steht im Mittelpunkt seines Werks. Ausgangsmaterial für alle gezeigten Fotografien war wissenschaftliches Bildmaterial, das zum Teil frei zugänglich im Internet zur Verfügung steht. Während der Eingriff Thomas Ruffs bei der Serie sterne nur im Bereich des gewählten Bildausschnitts lag, bearbeitete er das Ausgangsmaterial der neueren Serien stärker: Für die Serien cassini und ma.r.s. verwendete Thomas Ruff Aufnahmen verschiedener NASA-Missionen. Er bearbeitete sie digital, ergänzte die Farben, manipulierte Kontraste und Bildausschnitte. Die ursprünglich sachlichen, schwarz-weißen Aufnahmen erhalten durch Ruffs Farbbearbeitung einen neuen Charakter: Es sind malerisch wirkende, ästhetisierte Bilder, die in ihrer abstrakten Schönheit zu Projektionsflächen unserer Vorstellungen werden. 144 pp. Deutsch, Englisch.
