Wallis.This is an interesting biographical account of the life of Thomas Stothard (1755-1834), the English painter, illustrator and engraver. Stothard helped to design illustrations of almanacs, portraits of popular actors, and different editions of popular works. These include 'The Pilgrim's Progress' by John Bunyan as well as William Cowper's 'Poems', and Alexander Pope's 'Rape of the Lock'.Contents of this work include 'The Essayists', 'Stothard and the Novelists', 'The Annuals', and 'The Royal Engagement Pocket Atlas'.This work was written by A. C. Coxhead, with the proofs undergoing revision in his hands, but not fully published until after his death.Odd pencil inscriptions throughout the text from a prior owner who annotated and made notes.Collated, complete. Anna Eliza Bray, 1790 - 1883, was an English novelist and writer, first married to Charles Alfred Stothard, son of Thomas Stothard. "Bray's career was varied, her output consisting of twelve historical novels and twelve works of non-fiction, issuing from some of London's best publishing houses, including John Murray, Longmans, Bentley, and Chapman and Hall. As a novelist she aimed to create "living history" in her narratives, and she was careful to construct each novel's period and setting with sufficient accuracy." (DNB) Shallcross Fitzherbert Jacson was the nephew of Samuel Edward Widdrington, 17871856, the writer on Spain. He inherited his estates and name. In a half binding, with gilt decoration.
