The second edition of this very scarce work, first published in 1808. Inscribed by the author to the title page head: 'to Washington Allston Esq with the Author's best respects', dated April 18, 1818. Allston was an American painter and poet who pioneered America's Romantic movement of landscape painting. In this work, Irish art critic William Paulet Carey discusses Thomas Stothard's painting of Chaucer's Pilgrims, a controversial work due to William Blake's accusation that it copied one of his works.Carey stayed in Liverpool in 1808 with William Roscoe, producing this critical work on Thomas Stothard's Chaucer illustration.With an advertisement leaf to the rear.A very scarce work in all editions.
