8vo, pp. [2], xvii, [1], 212, [3] ads; contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, smooth gilt-decorated spine with gilt lettering direct; some rubbing along the joints; all else very good. Engraved bookplate of Stoddart Douglas and an early owner's signature, "James Douglas Stoddart," on front free endpaper. Stoddart Douglas was a Liberal Party politician and was elected to Parliament in 1841, serving for 6 years. Dodd, who ran afoul of the law in 1777 for forgery, was condemned and hanged. Johnson interceded and wrote several papers on his behalf, even though they had only met once. A final petition to the King from Dodd was also written by Johnson, "who wrote a very sensible and feeling letter to Dodd himself, and also wrote in his own name an appeal to Jenkinson, the secretary at war" (DNB).

Full Leather. Hardbound. Condition: Good. pp. [2], iii, [1], 72, 81-206, [2], 209-232, [1](Advertisement for Dodd's books). Substantially in verse. Pagination irregular, but continuous. Foxed. 8vo. 21 mm. Original full leather binding; boards detached, but present. William Dodd (1729-1777) was an English Anglican clergyman and man of letters. He lived extravagantly and fell deeply into debt. He dabbled in forgery in an effort to clear his debts, was caught, convicted, and, despite a public campaign for a Royal pardon (led by Samuel Johnson), he became the last person to be hanged at Tyburn for forgery. His tale really struck an emotional and literary chord in England and America. This work was widely reprinted for many decades. This true FIRST EDITION is very scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Very good. Second Edition. Uncommon. Dodd (1729-1777), minister and noted forger, had a meteoric early rise in his career, eventually becoming Court Chaplain. However, having incurred a great many debts from living "the good life" of Hannover Square, his name was struck from the list of Chaplains. He was arrested, imprisoned and hanged for forging the name of his chief pupil, Lord Chesterfield, on a note for 4200 pounds. Though many including Dr. Johnson, petitioned for clemency for Dodd, he was finally hanged. Previous owner's name on title page.

8vo in fours, pp. [ii], iii, [i], 72, 81-206, [2], [207]-232, [1] advertisements; title page a little foxed, some leaves cut rather short at the foredge (e.g. F3, pp. 37-8 and N3-4, pp. 101-4), but the text all present; bound in early 19th c half calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. First edition. William Dodd had been hanged on 27 June, after a very public campaign for clemency, and the public was naturally very interested in his final days. As is well known, Samuel Johnson had attempted to save his life, and had written papers for him when he was in prison, but none of those are in fact present in this edition. The book was edited by Weeden Butler (1742-1823), preacher at the Charlotte St Chapel in Pimlico. Fleeman, Bibliography of Johnson, 77.6WD/S/29 (p. 1320).
