A narrative poem in blank verse set on the island of St Kilda off the west coast of the Hebrides. Mallet owes, and freeley credits in the footnotes, his description of the island to Martin Martin, who had published his 'A Late Voyage to St Kilda' in 1698. Mallet was able to sell the poem to Vallant for £120 - considerably more than he had got for his 1728 poem 'The Excursion'. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Small slim 8vo, [2] + 60 + [2] pp. Original brown cloth, incised rules around perimeter and flourishes in all four corners within the rules, title stamped in gilt on front board. The author was a native of Delaware and a homeopathic physician. Very good copy, clean and unworn, bottom of spine little dented, "O" in "A POEM" on front board little rubbed, small tear at right edge of front blank and tiny tear at right edge of title page. Faint ownership inscription dated in year of publication on front free endpaper. A tale in verse, involving a slaveowner who wishes to foment a slave uprising so that it can be crushed, and those he ensnares in his evil plans. That the book appeared in 1860 with such a story line a year after the John Brown raid on Harper's Ferry is perhaps no accident and shows how prevalent the fear of such rebellions was in the minds of slaveowners.
