Text begins and ends inside wrappers, and those pages are included in page count. Gift inscription at head of first page of text dated Dec. 25, 1908. The story told in verse about 3 brothers--Frank Best, Harry Good, and Tommy Reckless--and how Santa and Frank teach Tommy "True penitence" for killing Frank's dog. McLoughlin issued this story at least three times with different illustrations. This edition has a copyright date on the front cover, but the illustrator is not identified. In Good+ Condition: front cover has vertical creasing; edges rubbed; covers slightly soiled; corners of front cover creased; just starting to separate at tail of spine; lower page corners lightly creased; occasional light soiling in lower margins; otherwise pages are clean and illustrations are bright. A very scarce McLoughlin publication.

A Christmas book that attempts to teach the reader a lesson on animal cruelty. The book follows the story of three brothers, Frank ,Harry and Tommy, and their three dogs. The story starts with Tommy killing Frank's dog, and Santa Claus deciding to teach Tommy a lesson on humility and animals. The story contains 4 full pages color illustrations, along with one two-page illustration. The illustrations are extremely detailed and vividly colored. The back cover depicts a variety of advertisements for McLoughlin's other books. 8pp plus 6 plates and illustrated wraps. Measures 10 3/4" x 9 1/2" Age wear front cover. Covers semi detached at base. Minor toning and soiling.
