First edition, second state. Ocatvo (19.5 x 14cm). 'Baron Rothschild's notes on the country are characterised by much shrewd criticism, and his remarks on the South African notabilities whom he encountered are very interesting.'- Mendelssohn. pp. [viii],198. With a frontispiece & 25 plates, some from photographs, all full-page. A scarce item, privately printed. The first state contained a libel about a South African Prime Minister, Sir Thomas Upington, and was withdrawn from circulation by the author, the second state being slighty altered (though it still retains acerbic remarks), the BM copy being the same as here. A bright copy in the published blue cloth, gilt. Some very light foxing to fore-edges, otherwise a fresh & clean copy. Vg. [Hosken 172; Mendelssohn II, 254; SAB IV, 88; Theal 258; BMC 21, 1201].
