Cloth. Condition: Very Good. 1st. Bound in red library cloth. 157 pp., frontis of McCorkle, 10 plates. Missing both covers. McCorkle formed part of Rassieuer's Regt., Raines' Division, 7th Missouri Cavalry. He was captured at Wilson's Creek & his experiences as a prisoner in Missouri are true indicators of the hatred between the North & South on the border. After trying to live in peace in Jackson Cty., Missouri, he found the prejudice unbearable and joined Quantrell at Independence & left an impressive record of his services. His recollections of Quantrell, Cole Younger, George Todd, and others make this one of the best books on guerilla operations in the West. Nevins I, 125: "One of the best sources on Quantrell, though McCorkle sometimes described too vividly events to which he was not a witness." Adams Six-Guns # 160. Probably pub. 1914 but no date. Nice copy.

"What is most interesting are the details surrounding Mr. McCorkle's three years as a soldier, and the actions of Southern citizens who were not part of the fight but were still active supporters. This period of history occurred a time when brother fought brother, and Federal and Confederate supporters were many times only separated by the fences of each other's farms. Mr. McCorkle's actions also mirrored those of other soldiers who lived in the Missouri-Kansas part of the country, who became extremely dedicated soldiers after being affected by atrocities committed by Federal soldiers." "Three Years with Quantrill will present a different perspective on the motives of Confederate soldiers. The author also tells about some of the escapes of Cole Younger and Frank James while they were guerrillas." Moderate wear to spine ends with small chips at spine ends, and moderate chipping to all fore-edges, else very good, tight copy housed in cloth slipcase with leather label on spine with gold stamping.
