First edition, originally the editor's spare copy and sent by him in September 1927 to the military historian Major Archibald Frank Becke, a key contributor to the British official history of the First World War. Tipped in are two autograph letters signed from Pirie-Gordon that concern his gift of this copy and the circumstances… of publication a decade earlier. Late in the First World War, Pirie-Gordon (1883-1969), a member of the Arab Bureau, edited his four-work series of Palestine guidebooks as a replacement for Baedeker's equivalent, on which British forces remained reliant. He employed material compiled by himself, T. E. Lawrence, and others, and the maps were some of the earliest of the region to exploit the cartographic applications of aerial photography. The first letter, dated 4 September, recalls how sale of the guides was halted in 1920 to avoid copyright difficulties vis-à-vis the Baedeker guides. "The very few unsold copies (the edition was small owing to dearth of paper at the time) were officially destroyed and it is now very difficult to secure secondhand copies. I have a spare copy of Vol. II, Central Palestine. but apart from that I only have my own set." The second letter, sent eight days later, encloses the copy. In peacetime, Becke (1871-1974) was attached to the Historical Section (Military Branch) of the Committee of Imperial Defence. For the History of the Great War Based on Official Documents, Becke compiled the six order of battle volumes and contributed maps and sketches, research, and writing to other parts, Falls praising Becke's cartography and drawings as "probably superior to anything of their kind in previous military histories." During the conflict, he served with the Royal Field Artillery. His bookplate and September 1927 ownership inscription are on the title page verso. For Becke and the official history, see Falls, pp. 25-6. Octavo. With 3 colour maps, colour map of Palestine (unfolding to 930 x 630 mm) in end pocket, 36 pp. advertisements printed on green paper. Original orange wrappers, green linen backstrip, front cover lettered in black. Contemporary ink stamp ("B.A.F.") on wrappers; contemporary pencilled sidelining and marginalia (likely Becke's). Light wear to binding, ink splash mark on front cover, some creasing internally, folding map with couple of red marks and short splits along folds, but in much better condition than usually encountered: near-fine.
