Contains a wealth of information on topics such as house, weather and port flag signals, tide times and levels, harbour and mooring regulations, quarantine rules, cargo rules and restrictions, lists of licenced pilots' names, phone numbers and addresses, list of steamers' names and numbers running to and from Shanghai, distance and bearing charts, and much more. Ports described in detail, with sailing instructions, include Tientsin [Tianjin], Dairen [Dalian], Tsingtao, Shanghai, Amoy [Xiamen], Foochow, Wenchow, Keelung, Tamsui, Hong Kong, Bangkok, as well as many smaller ports in between. Flag diagrams, charts and maps in colour. Includes 15 pp. of advertisements, many nautical-related. Cover, binding and interior in very good, complete and bright condition. Upper front page corners (1 cm.) neatly clipped up to the tide tables for November 1931, presumably the last month that the book was used (clipping is well clear of any text). Handwritten notes on one blank page in what is possibly Romanian; small hand sketched diagram of Woosung harbour in margin of opposing page. Small (5 mm) tear to cover at base of spine. Overall excellent condition for a fascinating and very rare item. 482 pp., 6 fold-out maps and charts, index. Size: 16 x 9 cm.

Illustrated throughout by 168 charts of tidal streams and currents and by diagrams of Icelandic and Faroes coasts and anchorages, ship's engines, towing, sun declination tables, etc. A set of detailed charts of tidal streams, round the coasts of Britain and Ireland and offshore islands, extending to the North Sea coasts of the continent, the French Atlantic coast, etc. There is particular reference to Iceland, including a more detailed section at the end. All times in the tidal stream charts refer to High Water at Dover. No title page is provided and the publisher's name, an abbreviation for the Grimsby and North Sea Steam Trawling Co. Mitchell, a member of the Institute of Naval Architects and a draughtsman for the Hong Kong & Whampoa Dock Company. Each year's Tide Book was compiled by George Gundry, an expert pilot and the son of Richard Simpson Gundry, the editor of the North-China Daily Herald from 1865 to 1878. The plates illustrate special signals (such as "Coolies Wanted"), the house flags of major firmsm including D. Sassoon Sons & Co. and the Chinese Engineering & Mining Co., and flags for typhoon and storm warnings. Small octavo. With 16 plates of signals and flags (12 colour), one house flag plate updated with new flag for China Eastern Railway Co., folding distance table, tables in text; letterpress note on buoys tipped in opposite p. 202, letterpress timetable for Woosung-Shanghai railway tipped in at end as issued. Original brown leatherette wallet binding, front cover lettered in gilt, front pocket without contents as issued. Mid-century blue ink stamps of one M. J. Harte throughout, including to text and folding table but not to printed area of plates. Binding worn as expected, splits to flap, front inner hinge starting: a very good copy.
