An exceptionally rare pre-1911 pilot, with the contemporary ownership inscriptions of Robert H. B. Mitchell, a member of the Institute of Naval Architects and a draughtsman for the Hong Kong & Whampoa Dock Company. Each year's Tide Book was compiled by George Gundry, an expert pilot and the son of Richard Simpson Gundry, the editor of the North-China Daily Herald from 1865 to 1878. The plates illustrate special signals (such as "Coolies Wanted"), the house flags of major firmsm including D. Sassoon Sons & Co. and the Chinese Engineering & Mining Co., and flags for typhoon and storm warnings. Small octavo. With 16 plates of signals and flags (12 colour), one house flag plate updated with new flag for China Eastern Railway Co., folding distance table, tables in text; letterpress note on buoys tipped in opposite p. 202, letterpress timetable for Woosung-Shanghai railway tipped in at end as issued. Original brown leatherette wallet binding, front cover lettered in gilt, front pocket without contents as issued. Mid-century blue ink stamps of one M. J. Harte throughout, including to text and folding table but not to printed area of plates. Binding worn as expected, splits to flap, front inner hinge starting: a very good copy.
